I heard a really good explanation of why the drivers of NASCAR should be considered athletes by Jeff Burton. The speeds at which they drive, and the G-Force that it creates is not something that everyone can:

(1) Handle
(2) Maintain competence over a 3 hour period

And while he didn't necessarily call NASCAR a sport, he definitely made a good argument I felt that the drivers were athletes who had to be able to handle everything that comes with driving a car at over 130 mph for the course of 3 hours.
