Drug use, potency, availability have all gone WAAAAAY up since the war on drugs started. Price has also gone WAAAAAAAY down since it started. Today you can get almost any drug at a low price and high potency compared to the 60's-70's. The shit they smoked/used back then was not pure and was expensive as shit. The government wants you to think it's working because every now and then they make what they think are "big" busts to convince the public they are actually doing something but in reality small busts like this are just replaced by the thousands of suppliers who make a bunch of money on the black market. Also the government funded anti-marijuana commericials are a joke. They've done polls and they know they don't work and yet they still do them. This is the epitomy of wasted tax dollars. You'd be hard pressed to find an intelligent person who actually believes the war on drugs is working, and if they do they're very misinformed.

If you want a easy to understand, simplified explanation on it go rent Penn and Teller's show called "Bullshit" and watch the episode entitled "War on Drugs". They interview a bunch of people, doctors, and experts from all different walks of life. They even interview a very popular and noted Harvard doctor who despite his previous notions has started to study the benefits of medical marijuana. Not to mention the fact it's impossible to OD on it, and there has never been a recorded death from marijuana overdose. Also they interview this guy who still gets 300 joints/month in the mail from the federal government's medical marijuana program and they show him smoking a fat joint in the front of the white house just because he can. He also has a severe nerve/bone condition and marijuana was the only drug he found that works.

^^exactly. even if you guys realize this, you guys should still watch the episode. They really do a good job of defining the government's strategy and following its effects on society. It's not just marijuana, it's the whole war on drugs. They do a really cool donut analogy where they compare the price of Cocaine in the 60's to today's price in terms of donuts because they don't do drugs but do eat donuts.
