I'm sorry. I've obviously had you all wrong in your time on TWW.
You're not a grumbly old man at all.
You're just a twelve year old boy, awash in a sea of early pubescent hormonal confusion.
I apologize for the mix-up. 7/30/2008 3:53:07 PM |

I think most of us seem to have known what sic means.
And your pet names for us are fun and all, but generally they're not even that insulting. I mean, "Frumpy?" Oooooooh, burn. Got me good there. And for "poletracks" to be offensive you have to take some pretty big leaps.
Also, a disproportionate number of them seem to involve dicks. "Pole," "penile," etc. Not to mention your penchant for posting pictures of small penises. The trend is a bit disturbing.

l like the it when they use [sic] on the news to reinforce stereotypes and/or mock
like they quote a letter from a black guy to his mom
"i axed [sic] her to date me and she said no"
shits off da chain, yo
here's a question, how about when they use brackets like that... example, let me rewrite part of my first sentence to see if i understand this...
"i like it when [the news anchors] use '[sic]' to reinforce stereotypes"
is that how they do it/what they're doing, when you see stuff in brackets like that? identifying an implied noun or some shit? 7/30/2008 4:10:06 PM |

It's replacing a pronoun with a proper noun to give context.
If I said "he enjoys posting pictures of male genitalia," it'd be better to quote me as "[hooksaw] enjoys posting pictures of male genitalia," so that everyone knows what I'm talking about.

thanks boone
i mean i've always kinda understood what it meant when i read it, and always figured i did it right when i was using it in writing... but i never knew the definition or whatever, and i don't remember ever actually learning it in school. just something you kind of learn through context, placement, and repetition....
is there a name for it besides "replacing a pronoun with a proper noun"? 7/30/2008 4:32:55 PM |

can't you also use it to show that you've replaced a letter from a quote? for example, the original was:
"He has never seen a vagina in person."
but if i were using that quote in the middle of a sentence, i could do:
"hooksaw is so pathetic that '[h]e has never seen a vagina in person'."7/30/2008 4:39:12 PM |
