I don't like it when machines are left sweaty-- but I typically just spray/wipe them down myself anyway just to be sure.
I don't like guys or girls with real obvious attitudes in the weight area. I don't like when guys blatantly stare at girls, talk about her when shes working out right next to them (thinking shes listening to her iPod) and crack jokes/laugh.
I don't like when people take 1 dumbbell in a pair. Even if you are just using one, take them both 6/28/2008 9:05:45 PM |

It doesn't really bother me but I just find it funny when I see people spending more socializing than working out. I heard one guy that does this every day talking about how he spent so much time in the gym the day before but all I could think was that he probably only did half an hour of actual lifting compared to the "two hours" he spent there.
Something that does kinda annoy me is when kids go in and use machines (this is at the Y and they have junior programs) and do sets of as many as they can because they feel they get better that way. There was a group of 3 boys probably around the age of 12 or 13 the other day using the calf machine. One boy was counting and was up to like 30 and I was wanting to use it because it was the last thing I wanted to do before I left. So I went up to them and said "you know you get a better workout by doing multiple sets and resting your muscles between each one." You know just trying to give him a pointer and to speed him up so I could use it. He told me he did sets of 50 and I was like aw fuck so I asked him if I could cut in real fast so I could go home and he let me. 6/28/2008 9:19:20 PM |

there is really only one thing that annoys me and it's this guy who will bump the treadmill up to like 8.5 and run for like 20 seconds and then puts his legs on the side while the treadmill is still going that fast. then he jumps back on for another 20 seconds. repeat....over and over again.
normally i don't mind unless he's on a treadmill right next to me. if he is, then its super annoying because i start focusing on him and not on running.
also, when the gym allows the broughton atheltic team go in and work out. OMG....it's mostly the girls. they don't know how to use the machines and they just kind of stand around.

aaprior: well i really have no idea where you work out so i cant say for sure. my usual gyms have 2 squat racks, so thats not a ton of space for squatting, dl'ing, bent over rows, all that crap. there are e-z curl bars or basic dumbbells for curls. you can add as much weight as you want.
i guess my thing is when im waiting around for a squat rack while people are curling light weights (no meathead, just that they can get the same weight 8 other ways in the gym). its fine if the gym is pretty empty but people are often doing the curl thing in the squat rack during peak hours 6/29/2008 12:37:01 AM |

Quote : | "1) Meatheads doing two reps and talking for 10 min sitting on the bench. " |
10 minutes might be excessive, but doing 2 reps with a substantial recovery time has a place in terms of building big muscle strength and getting a little neurological kickstart that only very heavy weight can give.
Quote : | "the guys that walk around with gallon jugs of water, when there are water fountains all over that joint

I just use the fountains or a smaller bottle, but if you drink a lot of water and want it to taste better than the fountain, or if you want to drink a lot of water and keep track of how much you're drinking, there is some utility in this.
Quote : | "People using the squat rack for exercises other than squats.
Circuit anything.

What the hell? a squat rack can legitimately be used for several other exercises besides squats. I understand being annoyed if someone is doing bicep curls or something in the squat rack.
circuit training is also useful. hell, the Crossfit workouts I do are often basically circuit training.
Quote : | "besides, one would rightly assume that someone sitting at a piece of equipment resting would gladly let someone work in with them and take a little longer break and get some water

yep. the onus is not on him to alter the pace of his workout. he should let you work in on the bench, though.
Quote : | "people who grunt. " |
ok, we've all seen the dudes who yell at the top of their lungs as they lift. That's ridiculous and excessive. I'm not a loud lifter or anything, but sometimes when driving out one last rep of a squat, clean, bench, etc, I'll grunt or even yell just a little. not regularly or anything, but every now and then you just can't help it if you're really kicking ass hard on the weights.
Quote : | "planet fitness is cheap, but still has some gay ass rules that annoy me" |
is that the place with the alarm that goes off if you put the weights down too hard, and that will kick you out if you grunt or yell? i can't believe such a gayass gym stays in business.
Quote : | "I don't like when people take 1 dumbbell in a pair. Even if you are just using one, take them both" |
what? that makes no sense whatsoever.

the point of doing multiple sets instead of one big one is to allow the use of heavier weight. 12 and 13 year olds don't need to be using much weight.
Quote : | "again, dont question other peoples workouts, maybe you can take the time to learns something and adapt it into your own

absolutely. probably the smartest thing said in this thread. there are plenty of people who do stupid things in the gym, but sometimes you'll see someone doing something that strikes you as odd that's really something pretty good that you should incorporate, at least from time to time.
Quote : | "1) People who only do curls" |
yeah. fucking beach muscles.
don't get me wrong, i do curls...but bi/tri exercises are kind of the garnish/finishing touch on a regimen that already includes lots of big compound movements (variations of squats/deads/bench/pull-ups/cleans/rows/overhead presses), and really not completely necessary if you're doing the right things with these other exercises.
however much you do for chest, you should also do for back.
Quote : | "people who move too much to gain momentum & cheat the lift ( dude you'll build muscles faster doing less weight right) " |
strictly from a bodybuilding perspective, you generally want to preserve good form. that isn't to say that cheating the last rep or two, particularly on the last set or two, isn't a good thing from time to time. it's kind of in the same category as forced reps and drop sets.
for general athleticism/functional fitness, some people quite intentionally cheat like mad dogs. For example, Crossfit preaches cheating some exercises (such as pull-ups, for example) because they ultimately aren't aiming to be dead-hang pull-up monsters--they're training for an overall capacity to perform work...moving a lot of weight quickly and intensely, and with a good amount of endurance. They also do a lot of exercises like "push presses", which are simply standing military presses where you intentionally "cheat" by giving it a little jump start with your legs. it brings your whole body into the workout, and also allows more weight.
I personally train both ways.
^^ yeah, bouncing a bar on bench is not a good idea. that's a bad kind of "cheating".
^ arching just a little here and there is ok...the huge, exaggerated back arches, and doing it all the time on every rep, is dumb.

There's a smaller bar that any gym worth it's salt should have for bicep curls. If your gym doesn't have it, I suggest finding a new gym.
I mean, hell, I feel bad using a squat rack when I'm doing deadlifts because I have to do them outside the cage, but use the cage to hold the bar before my first rep.6/29/2008 3:44:54 AM |

Two things...well, three things that I personally don't like. The last one can't really be changed, it just gets on my nerves.
1) There is a trainer at my gym where I think half of his job is to converse with his client. The training sessions last about an hour and 45 minutes with the actually working out taking up about 45 minutes. And they are ALWAYS using the machines/benches/whatever that I want to use next.
2) People who circuit or are doing two or three exercises at the same time, and insist on having all the machines/apparatuses to themselves. I workout like this, but I always let people work in with me when I'm not doing one of the other exercises...mostly because I feel bad about taking up more than one machine at a time.
3) This one there really is no solution to...but I can't stand it when one person is doing like 5 different exercises on one machine...mainly the squat rack or cross cable machine. So they stay at the machine for like 45 minutes. I can't get mad because they are doing their workout, doing different exercises, and probably not talking or wasting time. But come on man, pick some different exercises that don't keep you on the same fucking machine for my whole workout. Even when I might do two consecutive exercises on the cross cable machine, I at least try to hurry it up and get out of there because I feel bad for taking up the machine for more than one exercise. 6/29/2008 9:38:45 AM |

i never liked circuit training i don't know why... I like to work a muscle till it will no longer move.. then go to the next
People that plan on taking "substantial recovery time" need to let others work in.... its stupid for you to just sit on something.
i hate the trainers at my gym too.. they take too long on every piece of equipment and will not let others work in @ all. ohh and if the next piece of equipment they want their client to use opens up mid set... they'll go hold that one too. assfaces.

There's two types of grunts. There's one where you are pushing yourself to the limit and let out that extra grunt or fart that gets you through your set. The "hey look at me" grunts are what pisses most people off. If you have a problem with the occasion grunt at the end of a set, you aren't working out hard enough yourself.
And speaking of, I'll walk through a cloud of death from time to time at the gym. The farting gets old after a little while.6/29/2008 10:26:05 AM |

Honestly, none of this stuff bothers me. If it affects my actual workout at all, it's very rare... and not a big deal.
I go workout, maybe play some basketball... and then leave.
The biggest thing in the world that annoys me is fat people... and seeing fat people at the gym is a good thing, because maybe they'll be less fat eventually...
As far as locations... I live in CA... but need to find a gym when I move back to NC so I wouldn't mind seeing some suggestions.
