the only person here that i would hypothetically let watch my kid would be bottombaby.
there may be others, but they escape my mind at the moment.
in any event, they could only be women and only those who have kid(s) themselves.

I don't think that I would ever be desperate enough to let anyone on TWW babysit for me.
I worked as a nanny for seven years. I have heard so many horror stories from parents and other childcare providers, not to mention been in a few scary spots myself. No matter how responsible you are or how good you are with kids, there are so many ways that things can go wrong.
Even if my son weren't special needs, you would have to be damned qualified to watch him. Sometimes I don't even feel qualified enough to watch him and I am his mother. I haven't really let anyone watch my son -- I have very rarely left my husband or his grandmother alone with him and never for more than an hour or so. 7/17/2008 9:09:55 PM |

That would have to go if I were your husband. My daughter's mother tried to play that game for the longest time.
Special needs or not, there's no inherent reason a father isn't just as qualified to care for his child.
(and bad on him for not being insistant and taking an active role. not saying he's a bad guy--I just think guys should be right there in the thick of things in terms of raising and caring for their children).

^^^Well, so far, no one exists out of their teens with his condition. So we don't know.
And I trust my husband with our son, he just hasn't had the time to learn how to handle all of Silas's needs yet. When Josh isn't at work, he likes to spend time playing with Silas and just hanging out. Not learning how to insert a feeding tube or administer medications or do therapy.

yeah
just as long as you aren't impeding it, and it's just something that is taking a little time for him to get down. that's a little bit of a hot button for me, probably because of some stuff i've had to deal with. i don't like it when i see fathers pass everything off to mom, and I get pissed when I see mothers with the attitude that dad isn't just as capable of caring for their kid. 7/17/2008 9:24:50 PM |

I know how you feel. I'm aware of your situation.
I know of quite a few mothers who will not even leave town because they are afraid to leave their husbands alone with their kids. I have come right out and asked a few of them why in the heck did they marry and have kids with these guys if that is how they feel. I think that is crazy.
I have even been hired to keep an eye on dad while mom is out of time. I shit you not.
My husband is just as capable and trust worthy as I am with our son. He just doesn't know how to handle everything yet. Hell, I didn't know how to handle everything at first.

To be fair, there's a big difference between a case of 'your kid won't walk' and 'your kid's gonna die because he has no immune system. At all'
I mean, they're fortunate the have the literally world-class resources at duke that they do, and from what I've read of what they done...things look DAMN good...but it's too soon to tell (as I understand it. I could be wrong, and I'm sure erica will correct me if I am ). The technology is that new.

That's not what I was getting at.
I'm just saying that when it's a case of 'your son will spend his life in a wheelchair', there's a lot more hope to be had than 'your son has no immune system. A cold will kill him'.
You can send a kid to elementary school in a wheelchair. You can send a dead kid to elementary school, but I think they'll send him right back to you.
^he says he doesn't get why he's mentioned...but yes, he seems like an excellent father.

All of these children died before they were two years old until Dr. Markert developed a method of transplanting thymus tissue successfully in the early 90s. Her first patient is still alive and she hopes that this is a life long solution for these children, but 25 percent of her patients have died due to complications and the procedure just hasn't been around long enough to know. And Silas is only 2 weeks out from transplant, it'll be months before we even know that the grafts took and even longer before we know about its functionality. But Silas is a happy, loved child and that is all I give a damn about.
That and helping Dr. Markert. She has very little funding and most insurance companies will not pay for the transplant and associated costs. She is the only hope that these kids have. She was recently on Good Morning America and Nightline trying to get the world out there about DiGeorge Syndrome, like Boy in the Bubble Syndrome, but even rarer.
