Ive never had an addiction so its hard for me to see the need for anything. Im still i the mindset that if you have enough will power then you shouldnt get addicted to anything.

This is probably me just being naive.

I hope it works out well for ya, but as a future therapist, I would NEVER recommend AA to ANYONE. It has about the same success rates as quitting cold turkey, and in the meantime, all it does is force alcohol into the forefront of your mind, so you're constantly thinking about it, and the tension is high to ever screw up. Plus, it is based fundamentally on the Christian religion.

^^ so as a future therapist, if someone can't quit cold turkey, what would you recommend?

having faced and beaten my own addictions without letting go and letting God I say good luck to you but would like to note that AA would not be the path I would choose for myself

my friend has been in AA for some years and he is quite disillusioned with it... he eventually realized that it disempowered him - he felt less independent and capable than ever which was why he started drinking in the first place (during his parent's divorce)

I urge you to consider other options as well, though a support group is not a bad idea

for me, existentialism saved my life

^^ Ask the psychiatrist to prescribe them some wellbutrin and call it a day. Honestly, wellbutrin is so much more than just an anti-depressant. The clinical trials showed that it had effects on all types of addictive behaviors, including helping people stop smoking, and even compulsive eating behaviors lessened.

medication is only a part of a triangle of treatment here

on one side you need the medication under the supervision of a psychiatrist
on another you need talk therapy and community support from a therapist and others
and on the third side you need the personal efforts and concerted will of the individual

this is the best way to overcome addiction or other mental illness, in my experience
