Tears in Heaven - Clapton
2nd Mad World by Gary Joules

Mike Doughty is the shit, though I don't think "The Only Answer" is a terribly sad song....a good one though

^^ I absolutely cannot listen to that song. There are so many songs that make me start crying (practically bawling, not just getting teary-eyed). I don't know what it is about music that gets to me so much. Butterfly Kisses is another one, There Goes My Life, and Just to See You Smile to a lesser extent. Those are just ones I can think of off the top of my head.

[Edited on July 3, 2008 at 1:00 PM. Reason : even those crappy ones they play around the holidays that I think are ridiculously dumb]

i don't know if these are really "sad" songs, but they have a lot of passion..

Grace Potter and Joe Satriani cover Cortez the Killer
http://youtube.com/watch?v=paeNnR33i5Q

also, Ocean by John Butler Trio (this one is really long, but my favorite of all the ones i've found)

Through the back window of a '59 wagon
I watched my best friend Jamie slippin' further away
I kept on waving 'till I couldn't see her
And through my tears, I asked again why we couldn't stay
Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain
Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?
It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry
Come, let me hold you and I will try
How can I help you to say goodbye?

I sat on our bed, he packed his suitcase
I held a picture of our wedding day
His hands were trembling, we both were crying
He kissed me gently and then he quickly walked away
I called up Mama, she said, Time will ease your pain
Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?
It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry
Come, let me hold you and I will try
How can I help you to say goodbye?

How Can I Help You?
By Patty Loveless

Sitting with Mama alone in her bedroom
She opened her eyes, and then squeezed my hand
She said, I have to go now, my time here is over
And with her final word, she tried to help me understand
Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain
Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?
It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry
Come, let me hold you and I will try
How can I help you to say goodbye?

This song tears my heart out.
Tears are streaming down my face just from posting those lyrics.

Shannon, I have said before and I'll say it again, you're my fucking soul mate.

"He Stopped Loving her Today" was the first song that came to my mind, but the second one is "The Long Black Veil" a Johnny Cash song.

I love the cover by Dave and Emmylou Harris.
