"^ dude...it's people like you they are poking at, not Obama."

needs to be restated.
If you think the cover was "funny" because it showed Obama as a Muslim or him burning the flag, then you're the one it's making fun of.
If you saw the cover and was infuriated because you thought it was racist or it was accusing Obama of being a secret Muslim and terrorist, then you don't understand satire or the political angle of The New Yorker.
But if you saw the cover and got a feeling of dread, thinking "wow... i can't believe 10-20% of Americans think everything depicted on this cover is true", then congratulations - you get it.

This also needs to be re-posted.

I would bet that at least 8/10 of the people that "get" the New Yorker cover, don't get the fact that their impressions of McCain as a senile, old warmonger are also based on out-of-context soundbites, half-truths, and lies. Just like the Obama cover.

I am predicting that if obama is elected, he will probably get assassinated. Just my guess. Too many skinheads out there to allow their country to be run by a mixed muslim that has never been proud of america before.

Anyone else thinking the same thing?

So far no one's taken it seriously, even after you reposted it.

^ You should probably skip over to my John McCain thread and check out the links and comments made there (the Real John McCain videos are a good example of trivial half-truths made to make McCain look either like a senial old man or lying warmonger).

Just because no one has objected to a political cartoon that explicitly states (unlike the the New Yorker cover) that it is meant to poke fun at the "satirically-challenged", doesn't mean that many people don't view McCain in that negative light.

While Obama has adopted his questionable economic thinking from Jimmy Carter, seems like he has picked up his ability to absorb satire from Dukakis and Kerry.

...same as the old boss.

to be fair, he didn't think the cover was "funny" or anything.

^ i don't think he misses the satire. i think he just uses it to play the victim.

"Just Some of What Defines Barack Obama:

· He voted against banning partial birth abortion. valid
· He voted no on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions. valid
· Supports affirmative action in Colleges and Government. depends largely on application
· In 2001 he questioned harsh penalties for drug dealing. means nothing without defining "questioned"
· Says he will deal with street level drug dealing as minimum wage affair. Means he'll address the root of the problem, not just the problem itself
· Admitted marijuana and cocaine use in high school and in college. Let's not denounce honesty from politicians, ok?
· His religious convictions are very murky. i.e. he doesn't go to MY church
· He is willing to meet with Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Kim Jung Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. b/c wagging a finger at them from afar has worked SO freakin' well
· Has said that one of his first goals after being elected would be to have a conference with all Muslim nations. It's like he thinks they aren't all evil terrorists or somethin'...
· Opposed the Patriot Act. Thank God someone had some fucking sense...
· First bill he signed that was passed was campaign finance reform. McCain-Feingold anyone?
· Voted No on prohibiting law suits against gun manufacturers. God forbid a company market and sell their products responsibly
· Supports universal health-care. And?
· Voted yes on providing habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees. I'll take "The Bill of Rights for Dummies" for 500, Alex.
· Supports granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. I hate this issue...
· Supports extending welfare to illegal immigrants. ...b/c everyone condemns each available plan...
· Voted yes on comprehensive immigration reform. ...and we're left with... well... doing nothing
· Voted yes on allowing illegal aliens to participate in Social Security. We no cut your lawn for $3/hr for nothing, ese...
· Wants to make the minimum wage a 'living wage'. valid
· Voted with Democratic Party 96 percent of 251 votes. doesn't help that the GOP has fucked up damn near everything lately
· Is a big believer in the separation of church and state. ::Founding fathers all turn over in their graves simultaneously::
· Opposed to any efforts to Privatize Social Security and instead supports
increasing the amount of tax paid. valid
· He voted No on repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax. And?
· He voted No on repealing the 'Death' Tax. God forbid you get taxed on that yacht you inherited
· He wants to raise the Capital Gains Tax. i.e. let Bush's cuts expire... you kow the ones that were supposed to stimulate the economy?
· Has repeatedly said the surge in Iraq has not succeeded.... Hasn't resulted in the political gains Bush claimed would occur
· He is ranked as the most liberal Senator in the Senate today and that takes some doing. A useless factoid, talk about the the actual frickin' issues OK?

even items like this:
Quote :
"He voted against banning partial birth abortion. valid
· He voted no on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions. valid"

require more context to make statements like "valid" or "invalid" (even though in this case, they may be both completely valid - i don't know what bills these are referring to)
for example, maybe he voted against a bill that raised taxes on the middle class to 40%, and there was an amendment banning partial birth abortion. Such a drastic bill would not exist, but that's not the point.

I remember in the 2004 or 2006 election there was some state election somewhere where one of the attack ads said something like: "My opponent voted for research where subjects were forced to watch child pornography with electrodes attached to their genitals. Are those the kind of values you want?"
What the ad didn't say, though, was that the research the opponent "voted for" was simply the yearly budget for the National Institute of Health, where a small portion of it at some point was given to a grant to study sexual deviancy or something like that. That's not the point - the point is that everyone in congress "voted for that research" because it was just part of the yearly budget that had to be passed, and once it was passed the congressmen had nothing to do with how the money was spent. That's why I hate the ads and lists like above that just list bullet points of things a person has voted "for" or "against" without providing any context

yeah, im confused as to what the rolly-eyes are about. i mean ERIOS' comments may be brief, but he's actually making a serious attempt at addressing the points as they are made.

of that entire list, i agree with what is described to be Obama's position on just about all of them.

Of course, i understand that some of these issues (abortion, welfare, immigrants) are hot-button topics, and people are just not ever going to agree on some of them. But others are highly subjective depending on the wording, and some are downright comical

I mean, "He supports the separation of church and state" ??? get the fuck outta here! what kind of Rat Fink Commie Bastard supports the "Separation of Church and State"

as to the rest of them? well lets see: Habeas Corpus. Questioning harsh drug penalties. Talking with critical foreign heads of state. Opposing the Patriot Act. well THANK FUCKING GOD that we've got a presidential candidate who talks some gotdam sense for once.

Finally, he voted with the Democratic Party, and supports traditionally Democratic issues?? well, hells bells, Beau, whoduathunkit. Looks like we got us here a Democrat that votes Democratic. I'll be damned.

...

im thinking that email may have been written up by a covert Obama supporter. reading it just reinforces why I support Obama in the first place.
