Snewf, what do you think is the right answer?
I can't really give too much feed back on this situation. Snewf, you know why. 7/15/2008 9:59:23 PM |

^^^ No, but I imagine that it would be enough to afford a place to lay your head. Maybe not some penthouse apt. in Times Square...

not in manhattan.
40k a year on average -- pre-tax.
that might get you a really really shitty studio, but you could only afford to eat ramen.

hahah bethaleigh a 1br aptm ( read 450sqft ) in a neighborhood where you can actually walk after the sun sets will put you back 1500/mo and it'll take you a month of searching to find that. 7/15/2008 10:04:58 PM |

a place to lay our heads... one at a time
she's got four years of residency after her four years of med school and I'm not waiting 8 years to get my MA when my BA isn't earning me shit... besides I LOVE academia and the university environment - without it my life is empty
I love this girl too and without her my life is empty
I am not sure that I am comfortable with a school in the city though - there's no campus to enjoy I think I might enjoy the campus of Ohio State (maybe even working there) while attending a school in NYC online
a lot of this boils down to a few simple facts:
a) I hate my job and want to punch most of my coworkers in their fucking faces for being pricks (boss included, even though he means well)
b) I miss my girlfriend a lot and I regret putting a strain on our relationship when I freaked about my graduation
I applied to grad school because I wouldn't have to buy my own insurance but I think I may be paying a far higher price now.
[Edited on July 15, 2008 at 10:07 PM. Reason : also, NYC is expensive] 7/15/2008 10:07:10 PM |

If this is an option he is considering ON HIS OWN, I imagine that with another person working and adding to the income, that it would be doable for them. I don't think it would be doable for everyone...
Ok fine, since no one else likes my suggestion, then after she finishes, you go live in a community center in Brooklyn together, commute an hour to school, and finish the degree.7/15/2008 10:08:25 PM |

girl I'm considering paying $1000+ a month on my own cause I'm borrowing the money from Uncle Sam
its still fun bucks for another two years and then I pay it back
but that isn't sounding so fun anymore, ya know? 7/15/2008 10:09:42 PM |

And think about it... married people get even more financial aid!
Ok, ok... I get it... no one likes my idea.
Just go to Ohio and get into a grad program and a job there. You're bound to find something that fits at a school like that. And if not, at least your personal life will be peachy. 7/15/2008 10:11:48 PM |

the plan right now is do some online and then come back for a summer or semester and do some onsite
but that will be well planned by the both of us and I'll find the internship, etc somewhere cheaper rather than paying out the nose to find a job in town that won't give me any money 7/15/2008 10:35:48 PM |

I've thought it over a bit and talked with my gf for a little while too
I'm still considering 1 and 2
she says that she doesn't want me to choose her over my education and my dreams because she is afraid that I will be forever resentful of her
she said that I should at least do a semester on site here to see if I like going to school in the city - this scenario makes 2 seem more appealing because I don't have to sign a binding lease but will still have my own room in a dormitory setting and, to be honest, an hour on the train to work is not that much different from the 35-45 minutes I'm doing now
however, I have decided that I really need to quit my job - I'll weather it out a little longer to collect some more paychecks so that I can pay rent for August and maybe a deposit if I need but there's no way I could stand to work this job much longer, especially not while trying to earn my masters degree
also, regarding my seeming "obsession" with The New School... this school was the first in the US to offer a degree in Media Studies and is pretty fucking prestigious in this facet - the name carries weight and their program is very strong, which is why I wanted to come here in the first place 7/16/2008 8:11:17 AM |

you could move to ohio and enjoy the next few years with the gf...
once she finishes med school she might have to move across the country depending on where she matches for her residency.
and once her residency begins the 2 of you will have to work like hell to maintain the relationship.
residencies can be hell both on the doc and his/her family.
Programs finally wised up and limited the number of hours on call per week to 80. 24 hours on call in the hospital followed by several hours of post call catching up to do. Then there is all of the dictation to catch up on. Crash at home for a few hours and repeat.
all in all my advice is to enjoy the time you have with her while she still has time to have a life. 7/16/2008 8:39:27 AM |

just move out in Queens where the rent is like half what you would be paying for a palce in Manhattan. My brother comutes from there to Chelsea in 30 minutes.

that's fine and all, but what in the world does one do with a degree in "media studies?"
I'm not trying to be a hater, but that sounds like the type of degree football players major in.7/16/2008 9:22:05 AM |

on a side note about queens, the long island railroad only takes 15 minutes to get to Manhattan and the majority of the time it's free. 7/16/2008 9:25:47 AM |

a 1hr commute is somewhat standard up in NYC and definitely not rare - the "locals" i work with up here range anywhere from 45min-2hrs each way every day
what is this catering company you work for - where's my free lunch?
i definitely couldn't live up here for very long if at all - great place to visit and even better when everything is expensed - even on my wife's and my salary combined i wouldn't be as happy up here as i am in atlanta i think
as long as they are good friends that you could live with i'd do 2 - this assumes the same thing regarding a degree in "media studies" - i have no idea what that even means but it does sound like a bullshit degree but maybe it's a big deal in your industry - if it's a big deal then it seems like you'd be crazy to just leave
if 2 busts - then fall back on 3 i guess 7/16/2008 9:43:29 AM |
