Yeah anybody that is offered a chance to leave the torture of POW camps and refuses on the principle that he doesn't want any special treatment, and then spends another 4 years being systematically tortured and beaten is a badass dumbass in my book. 7/20/2008 3:51:13 PM |

How about disputing the content of the article rather than where it was published? It's a fucking opinion piece.

exactly what? I am posting a link to an article. If you don't like it you could dispute something it says. 7/20/2008 4:09:15 PM |

McCain wrote a whole book on the matter. If you are interested in his rationale, I would suggest you read it. 7/20/2008 4:12:19 PM |

dude
i can understand if you disagree with him politically
but that is undeniably BAD ASS. i don't know that i would've done it, personally. i remember thinking at SERE school that maybe I could handle this for a year if it was for real and I really, really had to. after that, i'd be looking to get a guard to shoot me if I couldn't escape (and SERE isn't nearly as bad as the Hanoi Hilton).
whether or not the benefits were worth the cost is something we'll probably never know, but for the sake of denying the enemy any sort of propaganda victory (against America or his fellow prisoners), it's certainly badass. There's a difference between being a prisoner of war and a prisoner at war.7/20/2008 4:23:12 PM |

^^^^^ no, that's pretty much inconsequential
^^^^^^ i already said to deny the NVA a propaganda victory against the United States (for example, there was already a backlash against the idea that the war was being fought disproportionately by the lower class...if a fairly high ranking officer got special treatment by virtue of his higher-ranking officer father's clout, that would add fuel to the fire. in addition, while on one hand, i'm sure they'd be glad for him, it would also be a morale killer for the other POWs left behind, and would allow the captors to exploit his actions again for propaganda purposes against them. Maybe his stubborn will to keep fighting and accept no special treatment made the difference in some of his fellow servicemen getting out alive.)
On top of all that, accepting special treatment from the enemy as a POW is illegal. Who knows if he would've been prosecuted, but it is against the law.

Terrible fucking stupid article. It doesn't even address its own thesis...all it does is argue that going to war in Vietnam was not a good idea.

I've never heard of anything, other than he can be kind of an asshole.
Only thing I can think of is that he's pissed off a lot of Republicans over the years for his political actions, and maybe some of them are vets who then say "I'm a vet and a Republican and I don't support McCain".
^ i wouldn't really call it political...he did it for military (tactical and strategic) reasons, and legal reasons.
