I got laid off a few weeks ago. I had been secretly planning to move to Australia so when i heard the news about a month before i started wondering what i should do. I sent an anonymous email to HR, but they werent much help.
The day started out like Fareako said. Rumors shot around HE GOT LAID OFF! THEYRE LAYING US OFF TODAY! SO AND SO'S IN THE ROOM! <MANAGER> JUST ASKED BLAH TO COME TALK WITH HIM.
Its pretty stressful. All morning went by and about 12 people i knew got laid off. I was in limbo because i really wanted to get laid off so i could get the severance and leave, but i also didnt want to just get straight fired and we werent 100% sure on Australia at the time. i didnt know what was going on. So finally i decided to go for it and email my boss and be like, i'll go if that works.
Few minutes later he came by, so you ready? hah and laid off i was. It was very much an HR assembly line process. Immediately locked out of the computers, escorted out, the works.
In my case its def for the best because i wasnt happy w/ my job and my manager wasn't doing enough to move or challenge me. I was pretty down on work as it was and plus i'm moving to Australia in a week. so boo ya. It was a really sad day though and i feel bad for some of the good guys who got laid off with me with non working wives, kids, houses, etc.
And NC unemployment just hit 6%. 7/19/2008 12:00:50 AM |

They basically laid off my whole department of ~50 people one time. We got an e-mail saying to go to the contract company's office. Then people picked up on the fact that ~44 people were being instructed to see one person at the office and 6 of us were instructed to see someone else. The 6 of us that went to the other room got a promotion and a raise. The rest of the people all got two weeks notice. They should have just sent them home that day though. Morale was terrible and a ton of stuff was stolen in those last two weeks.
I have secretly wished I had been laid off on several occasions, but who knows if it would have led to something better or worse.

It'd be halfway cool to be forced into making some choices that I'm currently a bit too complacent to deal with now.
I'd probably go back to school. Or hell-- join the Navy and see the world or something.
My primary concern in life right now is that I'll wait too long before trying to leave my current field. 7/19/2008 12:49:25 AM |

If you're thinking about making a major change, do it now, before a wife, kids, mortgage, old/infirm parents, etc - basically, all the things that keep most people tied down.
So you join the navy after a couple years in the civilian world. As I understand it, former military employees are considered greatly desirable, for their work ethic, reliability (you know, assuming no PTSD), discipline, and proven history of jumping through hoops 7/19/2008 12:57:14 AM |

I think getting laid off would make me feel liberated for a couple of weeks and then I'd feel completely fucked a few months later. 7/19/2008 1:00:50 AM |

I'm already married. Which is freakin' awesome, but it makes radical career changes difficult.
And as a teacher, it's not like I can just toss my principal the deuces whenever I feel like it.
So yeah, I'm concerned. 7/19/2008 1:25:48 AM |
