According to Duke's rules, if you post content and then a personal attack then you are in the clear as far as suspension goes. This scenario is why I think that rule is flawed. Both moron and hooksaw should be suspended for this crap.
That being said, this guy is scum attacking a church because he hates christians (UU's are xtians? wtf?) and liberals. I had similar pictures of the old man though. 7/28/2008 1:32:01 PM |

An "incidentally" at the end of a paragraph is not suspension-worthy.
I think everyone took it as a tongue-in-cheek jab except for hooksaw, who immediately validated any truth moron meant to include in the aside.
It was certainly much more tame than the average hooksaw insult. 7/28/2008 1:35:18 PM |

It was a very stream of conscious post (more so than normal), i'll admit. I really didn't think hooksaw would flip out so much though (ironically enough...).
I'm surprised the hooksaw bit overshadowed the fairly bizarre crazy man so much.
^^^^^ there's a difference though. I don't actually know any one on here, and I don't know how most of you look. but when I read posts, my brain naturally forms a stereotypical representation. Hooksaw's post often has a fanatical style to them, and he literally rants about "liberals," and he has stated he's older than most people on here (i know he's not 58, but a white-haired guy is what I picture for someone "older), and that's literally what I picture him looking like for the purposes of The Soap Box, even though I know he probably doesn't look like that (for example, my caricatures of people are always fairly tall, thin people, which is rarely the case). I wasn't taking a jab at him, I was mostly noting what I think in my head on a stream-of-conscious level.

See how that works? You can get the point of the thread across, and you can start a legitimate debate without personal attacks or skewing the discussion.
As for:

I dont agree with the assessment of hooksaw.
i think hes somewhat of a tragic figure: misguided, and probably going to give himself ulcers... and i do think his "issues" often point him towards the lunatic fringe... but I don't see him as particularly religious or violent. one day i might even just meet him and have a beer or two.
also, this is really off base:
Quote : | "moron : in general when I think internet conservative, I actually picture a late 20s fat white guy chowing down on a Butterfinger, in a desk chair they barely fit in, going somewhat bald, spilling their food on their keyboard as they fumingly type out their i-hate-liberal rants.

More info on the crazy shooter:
Quote : | "Adkisson, who faces his next court hearing Aug. 5, was on active duty with the Army beginning in 1974. ... Adkisson "stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country's hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of the major media outlets," Investigator Steve Still wrote ... Adkisson was a loner who hates "blacks, gays and anyone different from him," longtime acquaintance Carol Smallwood of Alice, Texas, told the Knoxville News Sentinel. ... The police chief said the suspect bought the shotgun at a pawn shop about a month ago, and he wrote the letter in the last week or so. A .38-caliber handgun was found in his home. " |

i think the day i went they had a "blessing of the pets" people brought their dogs, cats, golfish, iguanas, etc. to be blessed by the reverend (whatever the leader was called).
so damn hard to take it seriously.
i heard the Durham UU church was even worse... that mainly it was a social hangout for super left-wing fags and dykes.
too bad, really, becuase the history of the UU church is rich in American 19th Century Literary History.

Yeah, the one on Wade Avenue has gone downhill since they got the new pastor. When I was going there about ten years ago it was actually quite nice. The guy at the time would read off a little inspirational whatever, throw in some Bible quotes, we'd sing a song, more inspirational whatever, another song, some announcements of church events, and then finished.

yeah, see that's all i knew of UU, was from reading the 19th Century Transendentalists like Thoreau and Emerson. so, with that in mind, i go to the UU Church on Wade Ave, and they're so open minded all their brains had fallen out.
i suppose if im ever in Boston or Providence or something like that i might hit one up to see what it's like, for historical purposes, but i have no desire to go to another one otherwise.

the UUs are harmless. they dont proselytize, they don't crusade, and they dont try to take over hollywood institutions. nor do they jump on couches, wait for UFO's, drink poisoned koolaid, or rape little boys.
the worst they do is probably report you to the homeowners association for not mowing your grass often enough, fuss at you for not bagging up your dog's crap from the right of way, or post nastygrams on the condo dumpster about how to properly separate the recyclables from the compostables.
