They have, but I really like the gatorade bottles!!!

If you look at old enough homes, they were designed for a non ac dependant lifestyle. Porches, sleeping porches, and natural ventilation.

Oh

a porch is essential

Preferably a wraparound with a beadboard ceiling, and some ceiling fans.

this is an example of why I'd rather reduce first, and then bother with recycling.

Government-mandated recycling wastes taxpayers dollars, does not save valuable resources, and does not help the non-existent landfill crisis.

So yeah, no recycling for me.

My uncle used to recycle all his stuff in NJ as recommended by the local government. Then one day he for some reason looked into where it went. Same place as the trash, an incinerator. So he doesn't recycle anymore

I recycle like crazy
Try to drive more efficiently
Ride my bike if I'm going somewhere less than a mile or two away
Built me a compost bin with materials I scavenged from remodeling my kitchen
Keep my power bill low as heck
Made a vegetable garden (I've only gotten like 12 green beans out of it so far)
Take navy showers if I shower alone
Hide in the woods and shoot arrows at people to defend my animal friends
Bring my lunch to work instead of going out to eat
Visit the farmers' market like once a month

I agree with some other people in this thread: if it saves money or increases efficiency, I am all for it.

I have a trash can and a paper recycling trash can in the kitchen. I take the paper to the Wake county recycling centers.
I recycle glass, plastic and cans of course.
I need to buy more local food.
I started a recycling program at work where I collect all the cans and turn them in for cash for myself. Cha-ching! (not really)
I recycle all the plastic bottles at work.
I turned in the guys next to us at work for putting plastic shipping crates in the cardboard recycling dumpster. ( I mean they filled it the fuck up)
Once I reach the life expectancy of my car I'm giong to get the most fuel efficient, coolest car I can. (2009 Chevy Camaro , ok, not really.)

I use my own bags at the grocery store but I still drive a car and use aerosol hairspray.

I recycle and shop at Trader Joes.

I'll even spend a little extra money if it's very, very green.

I also convert people <3
When I lived with elise, she didn't recycle. She thought it was all kinds of cumbersome, dirty, and hard. She saw the light very quickly, and implemented changes at her work to be less wasteful and use fewer resources

mmm depends. not all dishwashers have the water saver option, and just running the machine uses energy too, not just water. and letting them air dry in a dish rack instead of using the auto dry saves a ton of energy.

It depends how you hand wash your dishes, and how full your dishwasher is when you use it. I gots to say, dishwashers are getting more and more energy and water efficient.

Unless it takes you a really long time to shave or you don't have a low-flow shower head, you're probably using more water to fill the tub than you would in the shower.

Collect shower water as it heats up in a bucket, then add that clean (cold) water to your laundry.

JJ next time you take a shower plug the drain and see how much less water is used than in a bath.
(but then i'm a dude and don't take hour showers either)
the thermostat, how long are you talking about turning it up for and how long do you leave it up... In certain scenarios its better to let the a/c maintain temp then to let it fluctuate like that (it also depends on your a/c system [p.s. i design "green" a/c systems])
my office recycles
CFLs are awesome but toxic to make/dispose of

Ohh and i live on nuke power and have helped get 2 textile mills to re-use water and install solar collecting roofs. yay

(shoot those two mills save more resources in a year because of me than i could use in 20)

- I recycle everything that I can at both work and home
- CFLs in both the bathroom and dining room thus far but we just moved in so I have to get another pack to put in the bedroom and living room.
- Air conditioner is OFF. Only ceiling fans and open windows.
- Use the microwave instead of the oven.
- Everything is on a powerstrip so if it isn't being used right then it is turned off and unplugged.
- I ride a motorcycle everywhere unless it's close enough to bike to. Motorcycle doing 65mph can get 70mpg.
- I watch Planet Green all the time to get good tips/ideas.
- The home I intend to build will be an Enertia home. Totally badass.
- Cleaning with vinegar and other natural products instead of chemicals that will end up in lakes/streams.
- I intend to have a garden to supply the majority of our vegetable needs once I actually have a yard. Until then I will likely grow a few things that I can keep up on the balcony.
- I use reusable bags wherever I go. This usually just means using my backpack since I have limited carrying capacity on my bike/motorcycle.
- I try very hard to buy organic and/or pesticide free food.
- Avoid polystyrene (styrofoam) like the plague.
- Cold water detergent when I wash clothes.

generally try to recycle - paper, metal, plastic (glass not so much)
reduce as much as possible = efficient = lazy
I don't really get why most of you think organic = green.
I like to buy local, farmers market etc, when i can
herbs and such in a garden will be later down the road, with tomatoes and a few veggies as well.

in most cases, organic does = green. of course you always have to be aware about your purchases and make smart choices.

Quote :
"Several surveys and studies have attempted to examine and compare conventional and organic systems of farming. The general consensus across these surveys[4][5] is that, in the short term, organic farming is less damaging for the following reasons:

* Organic farms do not consume or release synthetic pesticides into the environment — some of which have the potential to harm soil, water and local terrestrial and aquatic wildlife.
* Organic farms are better than conventional farms at sustaining diverse ecosystems, i.e., populations of plants and insects, as well as animals.
* When calculated either per unit area or per unit of yield, organic farms use less energy and produce less waste, e.g., waste such as packaging materials for chemicals.

However, many critics of organic farming methods believe that the increased land needed to farm organic food could potentially destroy the rainforests and wipe out many ecosystems."

I think I might be a hippie.

-have two compost piles (for when I do yard work and forget what day the trash people come)
-I keep lights and electricity down very low (that sh!t is expensive, y0)
-drive a car that has over 30 mpg (ha ha ha and you all said my car was too small!!)
-I recycle (might as well)
- live in old house in/near downtown (they keep changing the definition of downtown)

Contemporary can be cold, but I have to disagree completely on this particular house. It has great lighting and the use of natural textures and colors makes it very warm looking to me. It is an example of modern/contemporary done right IMO and it's especially good when you consider that this was done in an old bungalow that would not have started with any of those design elements.

I'd probably have something more comfy than two Herman Miller Plycraft chairs in my living room though.

Haha, I found my TV next to the dumpster a year ago at The Summit. I saw two guys carrying in a new flatscreen, and about an hour later, there was an old big-screen CRT TV next to the dumpster. I hooked it up to test it and bah-bam, free TV.

I was at my mom's friday, and she asked me to empty the trash for her. "Sure mom...but why are all these water bottles* in the trash?"
"Oh, we quit recycling"
"WHY??"
"Because your sister refuses to take the bin out to the street"
"..."
"It's not worth fighting with her"
"Give me those damn bottles. I'll take them home and recycle them myself"

Since some of them still had water in them, I give that water to the pets.

*: My mother swears up and down that well water run through a filter tastes like ass, and refuses to drink anything but aquafina. It pains me to see how much waste she's generating for someone supposedly so 'green'

It gets on my nerves how many people drink bottled water even though their tap water is perfectly fine and tastes good. I don't get it.
