Best looking in their classes compared to other Jap cars, but unfortunately not as reliable as the Toyotas and Hondas. (Corolla, Camry, Civic, Accord).

Quote :
"the corolla and civic fit perfectly in this category but corollas are lame."

Yes. Although, the new generation Corolla is probably the best looking ever. Civics look not bad at all. But with either of them, the driving is boring, although the Civic is definitely more spirited than the Corolla. And forget about luxury in Japanese compact cars. That's not their purpose. As I said before:

if you want the most trouble-free, most reliable, cheapest to maintain/repair, highest residual value, highest mileage, then go with toyota or honda. they are also one of the cheapest cars to buy (other than suzukis, daihatsus, hyundais, and kias, but i don't think you are considering those). if you want affordable decent performance and luxury, go with the 3 series, but it will cost a lot more in the long run, and more to buy as well.

Quote :
"i like the look of the scion tc "

Except, it is not a 4-door sedan.

Quote :
"i'd love to get a lexus GS but i'm not that baller"

Well then look at the ES or the IS. Especially the IS. You get decent performance, and decent--if a bit plain--looks. See if you can get one of these on ebay or any of the other used car websites:

Lexus IS300 SportCross

Or just a sedan if you don't like the wagon.

Aside from the Lexus IS, definitely check out used (or new) Infiniti G35s, Acura TLs, Acura TSXs, BMW 3-series, Audi A4, VW Jetta, VW Passat. Some of them come in wagon form as well, and look damn good.

These will cost more than non-luxury Japanese compact and mid-size cars, both initially and during their lifetime, but will offer much better performance as well.

So it all comes down to your financial status. There is a perfect little list of cheap, reliable, but boring cars for you, and there is a perfect little list of costlier, still reliable, and fun cars.

man, ive been considering a matrix or vibe for a while now. just having serious money issues. they're basically the same car, but unfortunately the only dealerships ive gone by have only been selling the loaded ones.

model year end sales not helping out?

3 series seem small to me for a family car... a 530 would be perfect though.

I really like my Matrix. It had a ton of space in it. Like only a little bit smaller than the Ford explorer I used to drive. Cargo and foot room. Plus it is fun like a go cart.

i test drove the sport corolla and the matrix yesterday. really like the matrix. i can't decide if i should get a new one though or get a couple year old one. last time i bought a car in 04 i bought new and have regretted it since b/c of the depreciation thing. but it seems like the 2007s and 2008s are not much cheaper than a 2009 so why not just get a brand new one

ok so i test drove a 09 matrix the other day and i think we're going to look at getting one. we've got a 01 sentra with 94k miles on it that i want to get $6k for. i told the sales guy at toyota that's what i wanted for it and they might look at the sentra tonight. i suspect they are probably going to do a "we'll get you $5k for the sentra and $1k off the matrix how's that". for a new model i don't expect to get much off sticker price but i don't know how much is reasonable. what y'all say?

and am i an idiot for not looking for a 07 or 08? they aren't that much cheaper on the used market these days anyways so why not just get a new one

^which Matrix model are you looking at? FWD or AWD, bigger or smaller I-4 engine?

I love my 2004 Matrix

it's great for packing a bunch of shit without resorting to something of SUV or van size

and it feels so much bigger than the corolla

and I say get the newest one, you may as well

All the Mazda 3's I've ridden in make this roaring noise. Its pretty annoying.

The Civic Hybrid is a nice choice. Roomy, good gas mileage, looks good.

^^^You might as well post it in the garage, some people might have helpful information for you. Not a whole lot to this car though. Its basically a Corolla. Same platform and same engine choices.

^I'm a big fan of the Mazda 3. Two of my friends have them and there's no "roaring noise". Besides, thats probably a tire issue. qntmfred, have you tested out a Mazda 3 5dr hatchback? I like it a lot better than the Matrix.

Unless you do a TON of city driving and plan on having the car a very long time (like 10 years) its not worth the cost to get the Civic Hybrid over the regular Civic. It takes a long time to get back the added initial cost in gas savings. (and the fuel economy savings with highway driving is very little).
