The Shining

not really jumpy-type scary, but more unnerving and creepy

That is very brave of you to admit that. Most people here will laugh at that admission. I, too, share an extreme fear of that movie. Most people think the premise of a curse and a spirit so filled with hate is silly, but it's a concept that I personally find scary. Plus the part near the beginning where the house keeper chick is looking around the attic and there is nothing there until the camera pans back around and the ghost chick is right there waiting for her. That part gets me every time.

It's not Halloween for me anymore unless I watch the original Salem's Lot. I'm not saying it's the "scariest movie ever"--but it's freaky as hell. And it's got that old style I like.

Well, Thanks

The part that always freaks me out is when the spirit goes to the sisters hotel/apartment place and the sister rings what she thinks is her brother up and he gets there in like 2 seconds - obviously somethings wrong...and then she climbs in the bed to hide and the spirit comes up through the sheets. ahhhhhh just thinking of that gives me the creeps.
The thing that made it really scary is that there was nothing anyone could really do about it Well i guess the main character tried to burn the house down but she didn't accomplish that.

event horizon? really? the only time i ever saw that movie was when we played the "Event Horizon Drinking Game". there might have been a couple of jumpy parts but i think by then i didn't care.

p.s. the game is, not surprisingly, drink whenever they say "event horizon".

I finally saw Event Horizon a few years ago, and it honestly didn't do much for me. It's more creepy than scary.

I'd second Aliens. When I first saw it many years ago, I slept with my gun for about a week. Whereas I know a few women who like Event Horizon, I don't know any who like Aliens. If she can watch the first attack scene and not be freaked out, then you're going to have a tough time scaring her.

cause you were too well informed of the movie maybe? A lot of the times if you're really expecting something it wont be as great. Over expectation and psyching yourself out I guess.

"The Thing" came out a long time ago and fortunately I was never told what it was about and haven't seen it till just recently. I watched it for the first time not expecting anything and when the shit started to pop off with the tentacles and walking spider heads I was like WTFOMGBBQ

so yeah, that one rates HIGH for me

"the thing" wins points for some creepy fucking special effects, especially the head-spider (you know what i'm talking about) which has probably scarred me for life

^ ground breaking effects for their time I would say.

Come to think of it, "the thing" has probably inspired more video games then any other horror film, maybe.

hahaha

Poltergeist
The Exorcist
The Shining

and my absolute favorite scary movie:
An American Werewolf in London

It may be because I first watched it when I was 5 years old but this movie still scares the shit out of me. It is the reason why a full moon kind of freaks me out and I have to sleep furthest from the bedroom door if I am sharing a room with someone. Even though the movie was made in 1980, the makeup in it seriously destroys any CGI monsters I have ever seen in modern times. Take a look at this scene where the main dude first turns into a werewolf (be forwarned there is some mildly NSFW parts of the clip where he tears out of his clothes):
