"That's cool. Maybe it's an okinawan thing (I've been to Okinawa once and mainland once). In Okinawa, that's how they did it, both when I visited family and in the local shops. Is onigiri usually made with rice vinegar, no. So you are correct. But I know I've had it both ways. Some of the time, my mom even makes onigiri with the vinegar if she wants to. There's no set "this is the right way to sushi." hell, I'll stir fry some salami/balogne and egg and roll it up with cucumbers and carrots in a maki roll. Still sushi even though I haven't added any seafood elements (ie: roe, tuna, eel, etc). You have no reason to doubt me."

ONIGIRI IS NOT SUSHI.

Yay, hurray for you, you've been to Japan two times. Obviously you didn't learn the difference between a dish served in small bite sized pieces topped with raw or cooked fish and a fist sized breakfast / snack.

Sorry to backtrack, but everywhere I have ever been sushi is fish on rice and sashimi is just fish.

Do I detect jealousy of my sushi skills?

Honestly, if I could have pizza I'd probably never get around to making sushi.

"Onigiri is not made with vinegared rice. It's generally lightly salted rice. "

The filling is often (but not nearly always) pickled fume or other acidic/vinegary fish-fillings or pickled products. I could see how someone who didn't make sushi themselves might be confused and think the acidity was in the rice. But yeah, it's the fact that the rice isn't vinegared that makes it not sushi.

Yes. Yes there is. In addition to not using it as a verb, it's not sushi if it's not vinegared rice. If it's vinegared rice of the right consistency then you won't get too much shit for calling it sushi.
