The fact that it was only one page and she still couldn't manage to write it herself makes it better to you?

I think a zero on the paper would work. Provide proof that it was mostly copied from that article and tell them that if they do it again they're failing your class and will be referred to student conduct (or whatever the group of people who make your life hell is called).

Oops, I didn't see that you let them redo it. Nice of you I suppose.

I prefer to set people like that on fire though. Cheating completely devalues the education we're all striving to get.

I'm sorry but if you made it to college and can't crank out a freaking PAGE of B.S. including real references and research in 30 minutes or less you need to GO HOME. Quit wasting your and/or your parents money. I've written papers on my laptop in the class before 'cause I forgot to do them .

Consider the idiotic educational system that prompted her to try this.

Don't be a jerk about it.

I roll my eyes at profs who believe severely punishing plagiarism makes them badass.

You were far, far too nice, GB.

Hell...I got in more trouble in 2nd grade, when a teacher was convinced I'd copied my book report from someone else.

It's not about being a badass. It's about earning one's grades and future degrees, instead of seeing how much copy and paste you can get away with

this is a further example of the misandric society in which we are deeply entwined.

on another note, home girl has a kid so you know she puts out. i think we all know what needs to go down

TWW needs to benefit from this in some way or another

To hell with that! My English 111 professor freshman year accused me of plagarism (on a portion of a paper) and failed me on it. The kicker is I didn't plagarise, but she refused to believe me. Maybe I'm biased, but you went way too easy. She deserves a 0. And considering that it was just a one page assignment it doesn't seem like a 0 on that would doom her final course grade.

you should have graded the paper as it was but also given her name, email address and phone number to the morally anal retentives on tww.

after her first five or so phone calls and emails she would never do anything like that again.

If I could find the news article easily, I'd link you

A good many years ago, pakistani police used truncheons to sodomize a woman who reported a rape. They arrested her, sodomized her, and then covered the truncheons in pepper of some sort, and then used them to sodomize her again.

It's just something that's always stuck in my mind

Why are profs so militant about plagiarism? Do they feel it threatens their magical sorting powers?

"Oh no, I gave a good grade to someone who didn't submissively jump through all the required hoops! Employers won't get what they think they're getting. Up is down, black is white, right is wrong. Society is doomed!"

One of my better teachers from HS used to say:

not endorsing plagarism by any means, but entire world isn't so closely governed.

the first thing i was taught by my mentor this summer was to research stuff that worked in the past and copy it. if it worked before, it'll work again...

but engineering is a bit different i guess

^^ Wow, that's ridiculous. I mean, past work is great if you cite it and use it to make an argument. But straight-up copying is just lazy.

^^i agree with you. what i meant was like stealing a way of doing something. for instance, using some other guys method of attaining a steam supply for a SO3 injection system instead of coming up with your own.

that's why i said engineering is different

i'm obviously not a great writer b/c i'm unclear

also, this is the first time i've ever agreed with furshia, i think

Not necessarily. We often notice the recycled (classic) plots and nod approvingly. The older masters, of course, lacked our modern compunctions. They took what they wanted freely. More self-consciously, postmodern literature copies extensively, somes word for word. This can be to undermine notions of authorship and authenticity, to highlight and explore intertextuality, or for various other purposes.

I had to suppress a laugh when the prof in my postmodernism class feebly tried to make it clear that only professionals could copy and that classroom plagiarism was completely different from what we were learning about.

Professional/literary writing is on a different plane than academic writing, though. The purpose of academic writing is usually to show that you've done some work and made some sort of progress toward understanding the subject you are studying and writing about. Literature is just about creating something that someone else can read and presumably enjoy. If they enjoy a plot you've recycled from somewhere else, you've accomplished your task. If you rip half a term paper off the internet, you haven't.

And there's no rule saying you can't reuse a "classic" plot. The rules regarding academic plagiarism are pretty black and white, so if you choose to break them you deserve what you get.

Sure, but I'd say the accepted constructs in academia need undermining too.

Yes, profs sort students based on their ability to do as their told. (Among other things.)

From the student's point of view, the task is to get a good grade. If plagiarism protects one from being sorted into a the chaff pile, it's a victory.
