New Bern is a city in Craven County, North Carolina with a population of 23,128 as of the 2000 census. The estimated population in 2006 was 27,650. It is located at the convergence of the Trent and the Neuse rivers, 87 miles (140 km) northeast of Wilmington. New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina and served as the capital of the North Carolina colonial government and then briefly as the state capital. It is the county seat of Craven County and the principal city of the New Bern Micropolitan Statistical Area. Originally a Swiss settlement, New Bern was named after the (later) capital of Switzerland, Bern. The first permanent seat of the colonial government of North Carolina was located in New Bern. Following the American Revolutionary War, New Bern became the first state capital.

Tryon Palace

New Bern is also known as the Birthplace of Pepsi Cola, which was invented in the city by New Bern pharmacist Caleb Bradham in the late 1800's.

New Bern is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.0 square miles.

Notable residents:

Caleb Bradham (1867-1934), invented Pepsi Cola (originally Brad's drink) in New Bern.

Bayard Wootten (1875-1959), designed the first trademarked Pepsi-Cola logo, the first female member of the N.C. National Guard, and the first female aerial photographer in America. Her first aerial photo was of New Bern. The grandmother of DeMatha High School Coach Morgan Wootten.

Linda McMahon, wife of World Wrestling Entertainment founder Vince McMahon.

Nicholas Sparks, author. He used New Bern as the setting for three of his novels, The Notebook, The Wedding, and A Bend in the Road.

Sparta, NC.... Uhhhh, it was the protagonist's hometown in the Tom Wolfe book I Am Charlotte Simmons.

It was going to be the home of the world's largest teapot museum, until George Bush mentioned it specifically (beside the "bridge to nowhere" in Alsaska) as a wasteful use of federal funding. When the president says your idea is stupid, it's pretty much never going to happen.

My hometown is famous for this rock:

And for supposedly driving out a jazz musician who wanted to live there with torches and pitchforks back in the day. That might of just been something my grandfather made up though

Clemmons, NC
Chris Paul

a preemptive shut up to all you haters: Hodge was being a poor sport and deserved it. I can support our team to an extent but they crossed the line. Chris was very close to his grandfather and his death was an unfortunate tragedy that shocked the whole community (our entire high school was invited to leave school for the afternoon and attend his funeral)
for those who don't know: Chris Paul's grandfather was stabbed & robbed during his senior year, Chris intentionally missed a free throw days later during an away game at Parkland- at 61 game points, the same age his grandfather was, he took himself out of the game just short of the state record for most points during a game
the infamous punch came after Julius Hodge, his brother, and some teammates said to Chris "i shot your grandpa"
watch ESPN's Chris Connelly's Good Morning America report: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxwyE5m44x4
technically his parent's house is in neighboring Lewisville, but the school is in Clemmons

also more broadly, Winston-Salem, NC

^^^^ GIT OUT

Chris Paul was the dirtiest player in the ACC, the refs just didn't call him on it because he's short (although strong), had a baby face, and was supposedly a "nice guy" off the court.

I guess the 2 people he has hit in the nuts so far in the NBA have also deserved it.

^i put my resentment towards him away, as I did for Kobe over the last 17 days and pulled for team USA. I was surprised as to how unselfish Chris Paul was during the games...very different than how he is in the League.

Whiteville, NC

Let's see....

- Baseball Town USA in 1991 I believe by Sports Illustrated. Growing up, our Dixie Boys All-Star teams won about 90% of the state championships in every age group. It was pretty ridiculous.

- Only pro athletes I know of are Chris Wilcox (tutored him on the SAT), Chester McGlockton, and Tommy Greene.

- Bill Clinton has been to our town twice.

- And Ward's Grill.

What? So because one or two jackass fans taunted him that made it OK to punch Hodge in the nuts? It's not like Julius was talking shit about his grandfather... that is just plain retarded.

I was born in Queens which is famous for TONS of stuff... but I grew up in Milford, CT which is famous for nothing but horrible traffic on 95 and having more than a dozen Dunkin Donuts...

Havelock is one of eight cities in the world named after Sir Henry Havelock, a British Officer in India, who distinguished himself in 1857 during what was known as The Indian Mutiny. Originally named "Havelock Station" in the late 1850's when the Atlantic and North Carolina railroad built a depot where its right-of-way crossed what is now Miller Boulevard in Havelock. The town was the initial landing point for an American Civil War battle known as the Battle of New Bern. On March 11, Brigadier General Ambrose Burnside's command embarked from Roanoke Island to rendezvous with Union gunboats at Hatteras Inlet for an expedition against New Bern. On March 13, the fleet sailed up the Neuse River, anchored at Slocum Creek, and disembarked infantry on the river's south bank . Elements of the Rhode Island Heavy artillery came ashore near the location of the Officer's Club on Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station and also near the Carolina Pines Golf and Country Club. The Federals captured nine forts and 41 heavy guns and occupied a base. The Federals transited Havelock from New Bern on their way to the Battle of Fort Macon. Despite several Confederate attempts to reclaim the town and the surrounding area, the Federals did not withdraw until after the end of the war.
