there's a difference between an illness and a lifestyle factor--some people have a medical condition that causes their obesity, most people just consume more calories than they burn

Good.

$25/mo isn't that bad - they can deal with it, much like they can deal with being fat.

It's not easy to go from obese -> not obese, but it's also not so hard that "It's too hard!" is a valid excuse.

Bullshit you can't. There are times that not only can you, you should (why are we a nation of panyass candyfarts? Oh, because someone got people to believe that they're entitled to have things their way, all the time.). This is one of those times.

Pretty sure most people with the brain tumors aren't choosing to have them.

By and large, fatasses are fat because they have chosen to be. I have no sympathy for them.

I don't think so....obese, yes (around 30%), but the threshold for being overweight is significantly lower than that of obesity.

^ Correct! Actually, overweight people do outnumber non-overweight people in Alabama, according to their own statistics:

I think if the majority of the obese could choose not to be through diet and exercise, they wouldn`t. its a complicated problem that the health industry and society as a whole need to address, especially in a state where practically everybody is somewhat overweight. It is certainly true that the obese people will definitely have to work hard to get better, but what i`m saying is it isn`t just their problem, its everyone`s problem, and i suspect that the state of alabama`s plan is going to fall woefully short of addressing that problem in a meaningful and helpful manner.

But you certainly get other kinds ...

# What have scientists learned about the relationship between obesity and cancer?

In 2001, experts concluded that cancers of the colon, breast (postmenopausal), endometrium (the lining of the uterus), kidney, and esophagus are associated with obesity. Some studies have also reported links between obesity and cancers of the gallbladder, ovaries, and pancreas (4).

Obesity and physical inactivity may account for 25 to 30 percent of several major cancers—colon, breast (postmenopausal), endometrial, kidney, and cancer of the esophagus (4).

there's people that have lost limbs but they're not letting that stop them from running and such.

my personal view of things is that there isn't much a person can't do, just realize that obstacles are there for you to get thru them, not there to get you to quit.

Charging more is the most sensational part of the plan, it doesn't mean it is the only plan. I have overweight friends whose reason range everywhere from a body's post thyroid cancer inability to manage weight, to an insanely obese state worker who liked to flash her tits and eat candy all day despite the fact that she was a Type XVII diabetic.

Believe me, there are a lot of fat people in Alabama who are fat because they eat shit all day and sit on their back porch watching their rugrats run around and play in cat shit (I was watching this go on about 10 minutes ago.) Make 'em pay.

To be fair though, they should do a comprehensive risk assessment and charge people based on their overall health, but this is a start.

There is/was a guy on Ft. Bragg who lost his eyesight in either Iraq or Afghanistan who I would still see out running in the mornings. Basically, his running buddy wore a harness and he just hung on and followed him around. Now, that is an exceptional amount of dedication, but it doesn't take much to eat an orange instead of another bag of pork skin.

in some people`s cases there is some element of food addiction as well- but you have to eat to live, they can`t go cold turkey on it lol

i was looking at the obesity map--MY BAD...

i think there should be a point where if they can't improve their condition with a reasonable degree of effort, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt

[Edited on August 26, 2008 at 2:23 PM. Reason : o lawd, maybe they should trade the corndog for some meth]

Duh.

I'd be skinny if I could 'quit' food cold turkey, because I'm good (relatively) at quitting stuff via cold turkey.

That doesn't mean you can't expend more calories than you take in, and it certainly doesn't force you to choose a big mac over a turkey sandwich.

Yes...but what a truly reasonable amount of effort is, and what effort people are willing to put forth, are vastly different.
