Our email isn't "webmail" it's IMAP and thus ANY mail app can be configured to work with it. WEbmail is just the lazy man's way of getting to their email.

Exchange is not friendly to any other platform other than Windows. The linux and mac users would be screwed.

Exchange has a webmail interface too, but I personally HATE web interfaces for Email.

then wtf is our mail system? yeah, it's webmail. or squirrelmail

as already stated, exchange also has imap access whether you like it or not and overall is about 100x better.. what do you like over outlook anyways?

^ I'm a Mac user so I use OS X's Mail.app

Quote :
"When connecting a non-Outlook client to an Exchange mailbox the username has to be specified as DOMAIN\USERNAME\MAILBOX in the case of a POP3 configuration, or DOMAIN/USERNAME/MAILBOX in the case of IMAP."

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Connecting_POP_And_IMAP_Clients_To_MS_Exchange_Server.html

That's pretty asinine. Not to mention it requires using a proprietary protocol that requires NCSU to buy a new set of Windows servers to run, and to retrain the admins how to configure MS's proprietary software. Exchange would be a lose all around.

He's a Mac guy, so he won't be using Outlook. Then again, Apple just went and added Exchange support into their iPhones, so it's hard to understand what his issue is.

The rumor I've heard is that whatever the next e-mail "solution" is, will eventually be phased out for Exchange.

Quote :

They're going to need to be retrained for the new system anyway. Things aren't staying as they are regardless.

I would like to know what happened with the brickyard/oracle calendar plan. The university bought campus wide accounts with oracle calendar and then never used them. Also, what does it take, or rather who should one talk to, to market an item to NCSU to purchase for student consumption?

NCSU Faculty and Staff are split across Oracle Calendar and Groupwise currently. Students, IIRC, can request an Oracle Calendar account.

Properly, it's Cyrus IMAP. Squirrelmail is the the web frontend.

^^^ Oracle Calendar is still around, yeah. The University has a site license for some Oracle products, the calendar suite included. Part of why it was never fully rolled out is that it's a bitch to code stuff for, and we'd like to make sure that whatever is rolled out campus-wide can be done so with automated tools. Manually creating thousands of calendar accounts wouldn't be much fun.

100MB min for Novell - yes, that was recently increased from 50MB, and your free total was increased from 300 to 350MB. They give you 3 systems with minimum quota, plus an extra 150MB to move to the system(s) you use most.

Why so little compared to gmail etc? - They simply don't have 2+GB to allocate to each of 50,000 active accounts. Welcome to a State run institution with tight budgets that get cut by the legislature year after year.

Why won't they move to gmail? - Legal reasons. The State doesn't like the idea of private State business being conducted through a company that makes money off ads to us when using the service. On the other hand, other UNC-system schools have managed to clear a move to gmail and I hear rumors that some NCSU departments are pursuing that option in preference to being forced into GroupWise.

But you like gmail? - Then use it. Set your NCSU address to forward and don't look back. Works for me.

If you're looking for full-time employment, then ^ is spot-on. If you're looking for part-time work, then I should point out that we're not currently hiring. We do keep applications for part-time work on file, for those that are interested in doing support for Labs, ClassTech and ResNet. Our part-time job web app is available at http://webapps.ncsu.edu/pt_job_app/.

If you have specific questions about part-time employment with OIT, please PM me.

Outlook FTW

tell them to quit "discussing" shit and actually do something.

I don't care for gmail or anything like that, just give me a gig or 2 for email space, and remove send/receive size limits on emails.

afs space needs to be several gigs - 10 or so. I fill my shit up so fast it's not funny. I had to request a personal locker just so I could have enough space, but I think they only gave me like a 100 mb, after requesting 1 tb

and what the happened to my ncsu webpage? did they get rid of that service?

Has NCSU considered space that we can pay for? If they're going to say it costs too much to give students x amount of space above what they currently have.. why not, at the very least, give an option to pay for what we want? I agree it's not the best option--but for some of us it'd be worth the price and in the end would cost NCSU nothing

edit: and quite honestly the fact that we're still counting in MB is a big sign that we're behind the times.. gmail is FREE and offers many many times the storage that NCSU has to offer--that is pretty sad

^^^^ believe me, i'd be perfectly happy to see something definitive about e-mail. we have a new vice chancellor for information technology (VCIT, also being called our CIO) this coming week, and it's expected that he's going to provide a lot of direction in areas where leadership has been lacking.

also, what do you mean about your ncsu webpage? www4 web pages still exist.

^^^ yep, paid-for space has been around for quite a while. login to http://sysnews.ncsu.edu and click on the Quota Manager link in the left column. you'll be able to make a request for space there, as well as information about cost, etc. paid-for space is renewed on a yearly basis.

more of a resnet question, but is there any way to get HDTV signals on campus besides an indoor HDTV antenna?

and also why is NCSU cable so crappy? Some channels (usually hbo, sho) lose all audio periodically, then pick it back up in a day or so

^ actually those aren't resnet questions, since they're not network related. i'd actually ask ComTech about both of those things, since cable tv is in their realm. support@ncstate.net. i'd especially report the issues you're having with audio on those channels, since that shouldn't be happening for any good reason.

I have a question thats already been posted.
Why can't I use firefox? IE is seriously annoying. For the simple fact pressing Ctrl+T is way easier than having to open tweleve individual windows of IE.

I'd prefer it actually be installed on each machine, but if it must be remote can it at least work?

^^ what machines are you talking about? Firefox is installed on all Unity lab machines on campus, and likely in most other computer labs as well. If you're in a Unity lab, check for Firefox in the Novell Applications Launcher window.

(The lab in the basement of Nelson).
I am almost 100% sure the version of IE on the computers there doesn't have tabs(not sure what version it is...I hardly ever use IE).

Firefox is in the Novell apps there, but everytime I try to use it it takes minutes for it to load and when it finally does its not responding.

^ gotcha. well, management maintains their own labs in Nelson, and they don't really make use of the software or configuration used elsewhere on campus. you'd probably have to either ask a lab attendant for help, or look on COM's website for their IT section.
