Maybe this time African Americans will understand that hurricanes don't operate on BPT (Black People's time) and get out. After the storm, news crews should be banned from the area so they can't photograph the whiners that didn't leave and want to complain about not getting help fast enough. 8/31/2008 10:08:44 AM |

Most of the people in new orleans don't have the means to get out on their own. Last time the government did NOTHING and all the rental cars in the city were gone. Blaming Katrina on anything but the government is foolish. Five days? Really? in the usa? This time they have been using busses, trains and every company shipped in extra rental cars ahead of the storm. Ignorance is bliss though. 8/31/2008 12:26:39 PM |

straight up retarded train of thought. they had ample warning to get the fuck out. everyone giving warnings was tellin them to get the fuck out. PLUS common sense says if a big assed fucking hurricane is heading right for your town then get the fuck out, especially if you live in a flood plain. Even if you don't have a car or a truck, get a damn bicycle and start riding, or start walkin, a person can cover a lot of ground in a day.
Could the gov't have done stuff? sure, but that's not an excuse to blame your own laziness or retardedness on the gov't instead of yourself.8/31/2008 3:03:32 PM |

Seriously, with the reports thrown in by the weather channel (and NOAA, and the other weather nerds), why the hell would they stay. It might be just as bad this time, or worse.
All the people who kept commenting on how they don't see how the levees are going to fail this time are fools. If the storm surge is high enough, they're all fucked. 8/31/2008 3:12:12 PM |

the past hurricanes more people evacuated and nothing happened. remmeber it is very expensive to leave and go somewhere far away for a few days all the time. It IS THE GOVERNMENTS JOB to protect people. Thats what government is for.

I don't think it was as much a matter of if they should leave but more of how could they leave? where would they go? where would this money come from? who would protect their belongings from looters?
Quote : | "Even if you don't have a car or a truck, get a damn bicycle and start riding, or start walkin, a person can cover a lot of ground in a day." |
The judges are going to penalize you like 4 tenths of a point on this one. Ouch. Why would somebody take off on a bike as a storm approached? they risk the possibility of being stranded on a highway as the outer bands arrive. How would you even walk/bike highways. Remember this isn't a matter of leaving one neighborhood or one part of the city. the entire region is a flood plain. And what about the ill, elderly, diseased and those with children? Do you suggest they find one of those long multi person bicylcles?
but what really does it is...
new orleans didn't even flood during the storm. i could understand if the government said "we can't help you during the storm" but the levees didn't even break until the next afternoon. Over 12 hours after the storm had passed. By then there should have been ships, planes and everything already there taking care of anything that needed to be taken care of but instead, it took another 4 days for ANYTHING to arrive. Inexplicable. Inexcusable. Unacceptable.8/31/2008 4:21:21 PM |

Yes. Your belongings are more important than YOUR FUCKING LIFE. Besides, isn't that what the government is for? Protecting people and their belongings? You know, the very thing you just said?
Quote : | "Why would somebody take off on a bike as a storm approached? they risk the possibility of being stranded on a highway as the outer bands arrive." |
Oh, well then. I guess they should have just stayed put below sea-level between two massive bodies of water. That makes much more sense. I mean, it's not like if they were on the highway when the outer bands approached they could have hid underneath an overpass or something.

You are right. The state of Louisiana really did fail its citizens. What is your point?
But yes, you are right. It was totally blue skies all over the US in the hours after Katrina hit NO. THere was no infrastructure damage or anything that would have prevented anything like that from happening whatsoever, either.]8/31/2008 4:27:45 PM |

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines?
Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?
Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?
When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a ‘vanilla’ Iowa, because that’s the way God wants it?
Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

I guess it never occurs to some that just because you live somewhere doesn't mean you chose too... Not every one has the money to up and move, and just about anywhere you live has a risk of some natural disaster.

nah, it'll be all good. just overtopping, which is MUCH better than a breach. I have been watching the N.O. Local News all morning 9/1/2008 12:14:48 PM |
wethebest Suspended 1080 Posts user info edit post |
thats why i said its a race against time. levees can only deal with overtopping for so long before they breach also with lack of power, some pumps have started to fail. Keep in mind that without pumps the city would flood on a dry day. I also heard there is a breach/govenrment explosion at one of the levees in the lower 9th ward. The strongest winds have just arrived in NO. The situation is looking good now but keep in mind after Katrina had passed the situation was still looking good and later that day all the levees broke. I know that water was being piled into ponchatrain during katrina and much of the mississippi surge receded back into the no area during katrina and that won't happen here but its not over till its over. 9/1/2008 12:22:06 PM |

^^^ It's true that overtopping is better than a breach, but overtopping is a hell of a lot worse than having the water stay on one side of the levee. Overtopping can cause a breach. I just hope those levees were built a little bit stronger than they needed to be, or else all that money was a damn waste. Oh, and all the people that stayed behind are about to get a nasty surprise, etc. 9/1/2008 12:32:42 PM |
