Tell that to Mark Twain, William Shakespeare, and other great satirists. If anything, satire tries to correct what is incorrect in the world in which we live. You may think Jon Stewart is a big joke, but that's exactly what he wants you to think. Isn't that Ironic?

The point of satire is to attack the foolishness inherent in humanity by simply making fun of it. Jon works through a "fiction" (his fake news show) that is clearly transparent to how he honestly feels. He mocks himself and his show to alleviate criticism, but that tactic is an inherent aspect of utilizing satire to sway opinions. One of the main reasons his show has been such an influential program for so many years is that no one of any political affiliation is above or below his criticism, including himself." |

it certainly doesn't make it look any worse than the even larger number of people who watch/listen to Rush, Hannity, Savage, O'Reilly and Coulter do9/4/2008 1:39:57 PM |

It's natural to want to have a good laugh, and modern people are attracted to progressive thinkers. If anything, this silly news show helps to expand the minds of it's viewers while projecting it's own ideas about the world, so how exactly would that be... bad? 9/4/2008 1:43:52 PM |

because there are stupid kids and teenagers that act like that show is full of facts...honestly i think half of the audience believes everything he says
i really dont know how someone could think its a better show than the Colbert Report 9/4/2008 1:45:55 PM |

I think your inability to understand and detect satire is what leads you to believe the Colbert Report is better. I have a sneaking suspicion you actually think Stephen Colbert believes the stuff he spouts off every night. 9/4/2008 1:54:40 PM |

The Colbert Report is obviously a huge lie. Stephen and Stewart are clearly kindred spirits. Colbert is simply more talented when it comes to acting. The message of both shows is to display the absurdity of the political system. One show tells the "truth" to you, the other feels the "lies" at you. Both are satire, and both are to be taken with a grain of salt. I seriously doubt people really believe everything that both Stewart or Colbert say. The entire message of both shows is to mistrust what is said, to be wiser to what you hear, and to laugh in the face of power. It's appealing by design. 9/4/2008 1:56:33 PM |

^definitely agree
^^i think your partisan blinders are the only thing that makes you think TDS is better...i fucking acknowledged on page 1 of this thread that Colbert's ability to actually stay in character is what helps make his show better...but dont read that, just assume I think Colbert really is a hardcore conservative 9/4/2008 1:58:55 PM |

I used to really like the Daily Show. It used to be one of the only programs I regularly watched. I guess I don't watch it as often now because I don't agree with it as much as I used to. *shrug*
It's a politically biased show. Always has been. And most of the jokes don't seem funny unless you already agree with that bias.
Of course, at the same time, I don't think the show is as clever as it used to be. Most of the jokes are re-hashed versions of older ones.
My guess is that most of the better writers left for the Colbert Report. I don't agree with him either but I actually watch his show somewhat regularly. Why? It's actually entertaining. Even when Colbert says things I don't agree with, i still think it's pretty clever. ANWR drilling/3-card monty was the best skit in a while.

Colbert takes jabs at republicans with every comment out of his mouth...I'm not sure how he would not appeal to democrats. And John Stewart just puts things out there and makes comments...and the republicans are literally feeding him material...like I thought he did a great job covering the republican convention, no lack of material there! Obama doesn't spew hypocrisy and bullshit every other word, so there isn't as much material. 9/5/2008 3:45:38 PM |

Obama doesn't provide any substance whatsoever, so there's no way to even accuse him of hypocrisy. He promises a bicycle for every kid (with 2 legs, of course), a penis for every straight woman and gay man, a vagina for every straight man and lesbian woman, world peace, smiling children, full bellies. He talks about roses and sunshine every day, yet never really says how he will accomplish it (by taxing the hell out of you).
But, he certainly does spew bullshit every word. Kind of like when he said he never heard a racist sermon from Rev. Wright. Must not have ever been to church or stayed awake, lawls! 9/5/2008 6:14:40 PM |

^ I don't know if you're aware but Fox tried a show called the Half Hour News Hour that failed miserably.
It seems that the Democrats I guess don't do enough hilariously stupid things to make a show out of (maybe that'll change with a dem president). 9/5/2008 8:11:26 PM |

No, I think they are hilarious...I also think it's important for everybody to calm down and laugh at themselves every now and then. Colbert definitely used to take more real jabs at Dems, but it's stopped in the last few months. I started this thread because I missed it. The only criticism I saw of Obama that episode was a quick graphic of Obama as the messiah.

Quote : | "Colbert's DNA to be shot into space
NEW YORK (AP) -- Should this world ever cease to exist, Stephen Colbert will live on.
The comedian's DNA will be digitized and sent to the International Space Station, Comedy Central was to announce Monday. In October, video game designer Richard Garriott will travel to the station and deposit Colbert's genes for an "Immortality Drive."
"I am thrilled to have my DNA shot into space, as this brings me one step closer to my lifelong dream of being the baby at the end of 2001," Colbert said in a statement, referring to the 1968 landmark science fiction film "2001: A Space Odyssey."
Garriott, one of few private citizens to travel into space, is collecting material for a time capsule of human DNA, a history of humanity's greatest achievements and personal messages.
The host of "The Colbert Report" will essentially be preserved so that aliens can clone him.
"In the unlikely event that Earth and humanity are destroyed, mankind can be resurrected with Stephen Colbert's DNA," Garriott said in a statement. "Is there a better person for us to turn to for this high-level responsibility?"" |
Now that's funny.
