Quote : | "Clayton, N.C. — Emergency officials said residents in Johnston and surrounding counties reported hearing loud booms that shook their houses Sunday evening.
Most of the reports came in from Clayton and Wendell, starting around 5:45 p.m. WRAL viewers in Selma and Middlesex also reported similar experiences.
WRAL viewers talk about their experiences of the booming noises.
Emergency crews were searching the area for the source of the noise but have not been able to identify what the noise was, said Capt. Buck Pipkin, with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.
Some residents have speculated that the noise might have been the result of a sonic boom, a term that is commonly used to refer to the shocks caused by the supersonic flight of a military aircraft.
Pipkin said the sheriff's office has called surrounding air bases and airports, and none reported a missing plane.
Officials at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Wayne County said planes are not allowed to produce a sonic boom. All of the base's F-15s completed landing at 4:15 p.m., officials said.
The National Weather Service officials said they did not know of any meteorological events that would have caused the noise.
Stay tuned to WRAL.com and WRAL News on Fox50 at 10 p.m. and WRAL-TV at 11 p.m. for updates to this developing story.

Man this is really weird. From the sounds of it it probably was something from space that blew the hell up. Usually the human errors are pretty easy to figure out. The really huge distance over which the boom was heard (i mean if it shook houses in clayton and people in selma heard it that's like a ten mile radius of boomage) points to something like a meteor or something.
Maybe somebody in a helicopter can figure it out when they see a big smoking crater in the ground tomorrow in the forest/swamp. 9/7/2008 9:40:59 PM |

It's a little strange because this was a pretty big boom and nobody seems to have any idea what caused it. It shook the house here for about 2 seconds and the shaking was without a doubt felt before the boom was heard. It may have only been a split second but I know that while I was taking a shit it was the movement of the house that bothered me before the sound. When I finished wiping and flushing I went outside and pretty much everyone in the neighborhood was out looking around trying to find out what happened.
WRAL seems to have done a decent job covering what the boom wasn't but it still leaves quite a bit of questions as to what it was. At this point since we seem to have no answers I'm just going to lean on the side of someone fucking up at one of the military bases and no officials wanting to own up to it. 9/7/2008 9:52:19 PM |

1. Dumb drunk/redneck blew up his still/meth lab 2. Dumb drunk/redneck (and friends) built homemade bomb for fun, detonated it in the country, and it ended up being bigger than they intended 3. The aliens have landed 9/7/2008 10:20:27 PM |

I will reiterate that it was likely a meteor. Sound and small (relative) area suggests that it probably wasn't a jet fighter. If it was, you'd probably have a longer range or reports. Also several people said they had heard a sonic boom before and knew that it didn't sound like an aircraft breaking the speed of sound.
If it was a meteor, you have a much bigger sonic boom, and then you could have an explosion, if it was an airburst. It could have also just fallen apart, and simply been the angle of the object entering the atmosphere that contained the sonic boom. Also, I have heard one entering the atmosphere during a meteor shower one night, and one of the reports reminded me of it. The meteor I heard made a sizzling noise, but it was so little, or so high, that it never made any booms or explosions. It was easily the brightest one of the night, but I was in the middle of BFE, and just heard a sizzling noise as it went overhead. But during the daylight, I would have likely never seen that bad boy. I read several posts that said they heard a sizzle, pop, and then boom. I ave never heard a damn jet fighter make that kinda noise going supersonic. 9/7/2008 11:19:34 PM |

Why not? Without hearing a tape of it, we are all speculating at this point.
Could be a jet that went supersonic for just a few seconds, or a massive explosion that somehow completely avoided human detection, or a meteor.
The meteor idea isn't the most likely, but I think it fits more of the profile. Shit for years nobody could explain Tunguska or find a single scrap of evidence of the meteorite. Granted that was on a FAR larger scale, but I would still say that its entirely possible a meteor did it, and quite likely. Tons of those things hit the atmosphere every day, we just usually never see/hear them. 9/7/2008 11:31:00 PM |

... do i know you?
some guys i know took an innertube made as an emergency tire liner for a skidder (those giant machines that are on logging sites) and filled it with oxygen and hydrogen and wrapped a canon fuse around it, lit it, let go of it and hauled ass. they SAID it floated way up into the sky. but that bitch went off like a damn ammo dump and busted winders and shit in town
two things i wonder about though: aren't skidder tires tubeless? and what would compressed oxygen and hydrogen be doing at a tire repair shop?
but whatever it was it made the papers in two counties9/7/2008 11:43:29 PM |

if it was heard between clayton, wendell, and selma, that's a fairly large radius. I didn't think sonic booms reached so far (although that way my first though when my mom asked about it), but there are military aircraft constantly flying over my house.
I was taking a nap at the time, and something that sounded like a cup falling off my desk woke me up (I didn't hear a boom though), I thought it was a dream, and resumed the nap.
But, if it really wasn't the military testing out a new plane or something, then my next guess would be a meteor. I don't think it was a meth lab because that would not cause such a large range of reports. 9/7/2008 11:44:36 PM |

And if so, we would see some smoke, fire, or some shit. Its been 6 hours and there hasn't been a thing found.
The area in question is very wide for a sonic boom, and not very narrow. A fighter going low and booming will rattle a house, but I doubt it will rattle two counties simultaneously. You would have a path. So far it seems like a simultaneous single, or very short, event. 9/7/2008 11:50:08 PM |
