I think it's hilarious that GrumpyGOP is so comfortable throwing around the word "redneck" and denigrating entire towns of people.

As seen in Benson, Johnston County, NC.

I remember this sign, so it was probably still there into the early 1990's.

I guess we should expect more and more of this sort of thing as time passes.

Makes me kind of glad to be in Albuquerque.

Not that it surprises me, but you've managed to take the most idiotic interpretation possible of what I've said. I have not once used the term "redneck in a derogatory sense, nor have I denigrated any towns. I have merely attempted to demonstrate that the immigrant population is no worse about certain other things than the native-born American populations so often associated with disdaining them.

Yeah I don't think the Johnston county natives are really known for keeping yard of the month either. I am pretty sure that is one of those counties where people will build additions on their mobile homes.

Once the single wide is about to collapse they get a double wide and use the first mobile home for a storage unit inside and out.

^^Actually according to the planning board in Johnston County (where my family builds custom homes) it's against the law to put an addition onto a mobile structure.

FWIW, I still stand behind my origional statement, although I do agree that the "trashyness" is there regardless of race and nationality. BUT, it's more prominent with the mexican population. As far as i'm concerned, 95% of them ARE illegal in areas such as Johnston/Wake/Franklin county, so it should not be very hard to "assume" they are illegal.

It's from my own personal goddamned survey. I work construction in all 3 counties, and out of the say 10-20 mexicans I see and work with every day, 9-19 of them are illegal. I feel that is a good representation of the number of illegals in these areas.

I don't think my ideas are conservative.

Illegal immigration is a problem that needs to be handled.

They are operating outside of the law. Surely, you guys can appreciate that that causes problems for people paid to enforce the law. And don't forget what teachers have to take on. In North Carolina, Latinos (legal and otherwise) constitute half the growth of public schools in recent years.

But y'all aren't planning to teach. You're not planning to be cops. And you're probably gonna get your degrees and live in little white neighborhoods and shop at the little white grocery store and try to get your kids into little white schools. So I think it's very easy for you to have no sympathy for people who have to confront the reality of illegal immigration on a daily basis.

And I don't think they're purposefully trying to confront it, by the way. To me, racial profiling doesn't make any sense when there's a big chance the person you're after is not going to have ID, not going to give you his real name, not going to show up in court, and not going to pay any fines.

I completely sympathize with the Sheriff on this case.

I went down to the courtroom a few weeks ago and probably saw about a quarter million dollars in legal fees, attorney/court appointed lawyer fees, and judges, police, security guards, staff and other workers at the court house processing all the illegal aliens and their crimes.

then of course they get sent to prison and live a much better life than mexico could ever offer in terms of food, gym equipment, and TV. i don't want to think about the police force/ jail house/ prison costs that we sink daily into illegals.

i'm sure it would easily pay for a huge chunk of the iraq and afghanistan wars

I don't know what ALIPAC is.

I do know that we need to act on this issue. We either need to kick them out or make them citizens. And I doubt kicking them out is even feasible.

If we allow them to stay here with their same illegal status, we will be creating a true underclass--people who clean our toilets, pick our food, mow our lawns, etc... with no rights to effectively protect themselves.

This is a problem.

Help me out (ye-ah, ye-ah), Brandon1:

Quote :
"The "culture" of mexico is not as "neat and tidy" as in America, and illegals bringing their "trashy" culture up here, is not very welcome."

This, among other things you've said, indicates that you're not thrilled with illegal immigrants (or Hispanics in general) and would rather they weren't here.

Later, you say:

Quote :
"Johnston County (where my family builds custom homes)"

Quote :
"I work construction in all 3 counties, and out of the say 10-20 mexicans I see and work with every day, 9-19 of them are illegal."

Given your disdain of Hispanics and illegal immigrants (I group the two because you don't seem to differentiate between them), why do you work with them? Why do you work for a company that hires illegal immigrants? Does your family's construction company hire Hispanics and illegal aliens? Why? If you know that a particular person is here illegally, why have you not called the police or INS? How do you reconcile your view of illegals/Hispanics with your actions?

I ask because you seem to hold a lot of animosity for someone who likely benefits in a fairly direct manner from readily available cheap labor.

This is what happens when you wait over a decade and then start kicking them out......

http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/09/10/citizen.children/index.html?iref=newssearch

Excerpt:

Quote :
"In Quiroz's case, she was born in Washington state, lived there her entire life and went to school there. But her mother, Ana Reyes, entered the United States illegally before Quiroz was born and U.S. immigration officials caught up with her last year on her birthday.

"I was there when they handcuffed her," Quiroz says. "I was there when they took her down."

Two of her brothers, who had come with their mother to the United States when they were young children, also were taken into custody.

It was the start of a downward spiral for Quiroz. When her mother and brothers were deported, Quiroz and her 6-year-old, American-born sister had no choice but to return to Mexico City with them.

Her seventh-grade year was spent in a classroom where she didn't understand the language.

"I never belonged there," she says. "I'd just come home, sit down, cry. I'd say, 'Mom, I can't do it.' ... I can't read or write Spanish."

She adds, "I felt like there were no dreams for me.""

Quote :
" His group, Organization to Help Citizen Children, works with churches along the U.S.-Mexico border to provide support for children whose mother or father is deported to Mexico.

Kennard hired a private tutor to get Quiroz up to speed for missing a year of schooling. "She's conflicted because she knows that she's got to get an education and this is the only way to do it. But she also feels the love for her mother and that's the torture."

Quiroz's mother then made the incredibly painful decision to implore her daughter to go to Texas, an unbearable decision for the teen to leave her family for her country and her future.

Her older brother, Carlos Quiroz, was about 3 years old when his mom took him to the United States last decade. He misses his sister, but knows he can't return. "I have to accept that ... and try to make it work," he says. Video Watch why Carlos Quiroz feels like an American »

He's working to get a job and hopes to enter college in Mexico. But his mind is still in the land he grew up in. "I don't feel like I belong here. I feel like I was taken out of somewhere where I belonged," he says. "My whole life is over there."

His sister is now living in Texas, adjusting to eighth grade and all the changes around her. When she's alone, she says it still hurts.

"I want to be in my mom's arms," she says, choking back tears.

The dream that keeps her going?

She's determined to become a lawyer to fight for kids who are forced to endure painful separations.

"My mom only came here to make a better life," she says. "I want to be a lawyer to help people in the same situation as me." "

So I guess all I can say to the "THEY TOOK ERR JERBS" crowd is that it would make more sense to have the rest of her family here to work and pay taxes, spend money to grow business, and contribute to the community. That would at least offset the cost of the girls education.

Otherwise as you continue to break up families who have been here for decades the border states are going to get stuck with millions of children with no families or support system here but have just as much of a right to be here as you and I.

My current job: substitute teacher.
My last volunteer position: ESL instructor to Hispanic kids
My upcoming volunteer position: working with El Pueblo's higher education initiative
Favorite Grocery Store: Patel Brothers (in case you were wondering, decidedly not white)
Number of apartments in my complex occupied by whites: Two, including my own
Number occupied by Hispanics: At least four, including my next door neighbors

In short, next time you want to make some assumptions about someone's whiteness, hows about instead you just shut the fuck up.

Quote :
"I went down to the courtroom a few weeks ago and probably saw about a quarter million dollars in legal fees, attorney/court appointed lawyer fees, and judges, police, security guards, staff and other workers at the court house processing all the illegal aliens and their crimes."

How do you know they were illegal aliens?
How confident are you that you can tell the difference between Hispanics and other minorities?
What experience do you have with the justice system that makes you qualified to estimate costs like that? Did you just pull the number out of your ass?

Quote :
"then of course they get sent to prison and live a much better life than mexico could ever offer in terms of food, gym equipment, and TV."

What makes you think they got sent to prison?

I think you grossly overestimate the shittiness of Mexico. Prison probably offers better access to gym equipment. After that it loses in pretty much every category. But of course, you don't know.

Quote :
"i'm sure it would easily pay for a huge chunk of the iraq and afghanistan wars"

Well, those wars together cost about 172 billion dollars a year. We spend about 37 billion dollars a year on the prison system. If we assume that half of the people in prison are illegal immigrants (and they aren't -- that's a hugely inflated number for every state except maybe California), and we attribute to them half of the total cost of the prison system, that's about 18.5 billion -- a little more than 10% of the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Even though that figure doesn't really qualify as a "huge chunk" by anyone's standards, it's very much exaggerated. Far fewer than half of people in the prison system are illegal immigrants. A fair percentage of that 37 billion dollars goes to various fixed or inflexible costs and shouldn't be counted. Also, the war numbers are deflated, only taking into account direct spending and not various supplementals and economic harm.

In short, your baseless and wild assertions have further put every single word you say into question.

mexico va a ser un buen pais un dia en el futuro. es una gente humilde que sabe trabajar. creo yo que los hijos de los ilegales aqui van a ser lideres aqui y tambien tener compañias y empresas buenas.

When I go to work it's almost always me, the big goofy white guy, walking into a room full (sometimes exclusively) with black and latino kids I've never seen before. Then I have to try to tell them what to do. It's not like I'm running the risk of being shot, but it's not exactly easy. And, especially during prolonged teacher absences or repeat work with the same teacher, it provides a fair amount of insight into the problems they've got.

I don't know what I was thinking. Obviously working one-on-one with Hispanic kids who just moved to the area and their teachers is not the sort of place you come to understand the difficulties faced by Hispanic kids who just moved to the area and their teachers.

"Sheriff: Respect rights of El Pueblo, NAACP to gather
Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell

Posted: Sep. 26 4:51 p.m.
Updated: Sep. 26 7:45 p.m.

Smithfield, N.C. — Sheriff Steve Bizzell said that safety and constitutional rights should be priorities this weekend as groups gather for a prayer vigil in Smithfield.

Advocacy group El Pueblo announced Friday that they would organize the vigil to challenge intolerance.

Rev. William Barber, president of the state NAACP chapter, was expected to speak at the vigil, set for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Smithfield courthouse.

Bizzell has been under fire since his comments on the growing minority population in his county were published in The News & Observer newspaper in Raleigh. He called Mexicans "trashy" and said the growing Latino population in his county was "breeding like rabbits."

Twenty-six civil rights organizations responded to those remarks with a call for Bizzell’s resignation. Hispanic media group Que Pasa has also called for Bizzell to resign.

County commissioners have been unstinting in their support of the sheriff, indicating they have no intention of seeking his removal.

Cookie Pope, chairwoman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners, issued a statement on behalf of the board, saying that commissioners supported Bizzell's "successful efforts to protect the citizens of Johnston County against crimes."

In a statement, Bizzell asked that the right for peaceable assembly be honored Sunday. He wrote:

"As citizens of our great country, one of our most cherished rights is the ability to peacefully assemble. El Pueblo and the NAACP have announced their intentions to assemble in Smithfield this Sunday afternoon. I ask that everyone respect their right to have this gathering. It is my desire for Johnston County to be a safe place to host groups from outside our county to gather with their local members within the rule of law. Any interference with this gathering would be contrary to our constitution and not acceptable.""
