It is just sad that this woman has just proved that she doesn't know jack about the current administration or foreign policy, and she still has plenty of rabid people planning to vote for her. Of course, what the current administration have done and foreign policy do not rank among the areas inthe which average american holds interest. However, I would hope they would want a leader that had at least a little knowledge about things they weren't willing to watchdog. Maybe they don't about domestic and national policy to be concerned themselves, which is pretty distressing.

Aside from that, she has been withholding interviews and press conferences long enough for somebody in the party to school her on this stuff enough that she doesn't sound totally inept. I'm not sure that this Ultra-washington-outsider campaign is really going to work for them. If anyone accused Obama of trying to garner votes through sensationalism and getting voters to choose based on feeling, they have to concede that Palin is after the very same thing.

In fact, the whole affair really smacks of 1840 election`s winning "Log cabin and hard cider" campaign. The nation faced a financial crisis, certified old fart William Henry Harrison ran with John Tyler on a sensationalist campaign depicting themselves as Frontiersmen and war heroes.

Harrison died within a month of being inaugurated and left John Tyler as president. He was never taken seriously and did not accomplish terribly much during his presidency, and they considered impeaching him. He did send the order annex texas on his last day of presidency, which turned into a bloody war for over a decade.

I believe that some of Palin's hyper-nationalist comments regarding foreign policy with Iran and Russia indicate that it would be a very dangerous situation to have her unintentionally become president.

I'm doing voter registration today! Of course there's no guarantee who they'll vote for, but Durham is a pretty Obama-friendly place.

i'm not at all a fan of Sarah Palin, and McCain has tainted his brand over the last few years by trying to suck up to the GOP base, but there is pretty much nothing that could cause me to vote for Obama. I don't dislike him personally--by politician standards, he seems like an alright guy...but I abhor his stances on issues. It's a question of vote GOP, vote Libertarian, or don't vote...and right now, I'm still satisfied enough with McCain to vote GOP (as opposed to last time when it was a question of vote Libertarian--which I held my nose and did--or not vote).

they keep saying that NC might go blue but I'm not too optimistic. They say every year that State's football team is gonna do good and that never happens!

i would, but i can only do it in Soap Box

i can, however--especially in the case of someone like Airbag who already rightfully has a bullseye on his head--offer to not suspend his account if he's gracious enough to edit that post to something acceptable.

Some commentary from here:

Quote :
"I wonder if there's enough room for all of us in Canada, should McCain win. Eh?"

Quote :
"I don't think the ability to form coherent thoughts is even a factor in US elections anymore."

Quote :
"I may be young, but I don't want someone "just like me" to become president. I want someone smarter, better educated, and capable of handling ALL the stresses that the job entails. Someone who took 6 years and 6 schools to get her bachelors degree doesn't really fit that description.
And a man who wants to suspend running for president because of a crisis in one sector of the county doesn't strike me as someone who is capable of running the ENTIRE country for 4 years."

Quote :
"

I'd rather wake up on fire than have that woman in office.
"

Quote :
"

A joke that explains it all:

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President. The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.'

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.

The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.'

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with.'
"

Quote :
"Ha ha! She sounds exactly how I imagine I sound when I'm trying to bullshit my work experience in interviews."

Quote :
"I think that if your political views are so centered on being pro-life or other religious issues, I can totally see why you would vote for her. And if there wasn't the oldest candidate for President in history running with her, I would just go ahead and say that this is a move by McCain to pander to the religious right and laugh it off and probably not care too much one way or the other.

The problem is that McCain isn't particularly healthy, has outlived the entire male lineage of his family already, has cancer, and (lest we forget) suffered 5 years of torture. And he wants to have the most stressful job in the world. This is a woman who isn't just a "heartbeat away from the presidency", but she will LIKELY need to assume executive power at some point during his term. And for some Americans, that would be a literal Godsend, because a Palin presidency is a Christian conservative presidency with the same agenda and outlook.

Anyway, that was all a long-winded way of saying, "yeah, I get why some people like her, but holy shit wtf?""

"I am THRILLED AND ELECTRIFIED in a way that I haven't been for YEARS by the choice of Sarah Palin for the VP slot. Why? Well, let me tell you...

1. She's good people. First off, she's a born-again Christian. The single most important thing in my book. And I like her. I like her values, her principles and her personality.

2. She's a proven reformer. She DID take on the establishment in AK--and she made some compromises along the way. As all in leadership MUST do. Of course she kept the $ that the feds gave her for that bridge!!! But as her interests changed from limited local (Wasilla mayor) to statewide (Governor) her position changed to reflect her constiuent interests. You have to respect that--it's only fair. And seriously, they only spent $30k for a lobbyist for Wasilla. I would bet you a bunch of $$ that is WAAAAY below average for municipalities.

3. She does have executive experience. She's the ONLY one who has it. Go be mayor of a small town...not to mention Governor of a state...then come tell me she's not experienced "to be a heartbeat away" from the presidency. Uhhh....YES SHE IS. She's the only one who is! Executive power is a TOTALLY different beast than legisilative. Period.

4. Who cares if her daughter is pregnant?? I mean--really?? So is like 35% of the rest of the American teenage population. Her family is not immune to the problems that crop up from living in a trouble-filled world. What matters is that she is encouraging good decisions and supporting her daughter as she begins the difficult task of being a teenage mother. Good for her.

5. A woman VP? Oh yeah. And what I love best--she's a real woman. Mom. PTA. Feminine. The whole bit. Work away--even w/ an infant. You can do it!!

6. Troopergate? Please. When you are the Governor, you can fire your commisioners. Period. The commissioner has said she didn't ask for her ex-bro-in-law to be fired. Good enough for me. Besides, based on the Trooper in question (drunk driving arrests both ON and off duty, tasering his 10 year old step-son-at the request of the 1o year old to prove he was not a 'mama's boy', death threats against his father-in-law) should have been fired. But in fact, is still a trooper. Troopergate?? Come on.

7. Banning books?? Didn't happen. Ask the librarian. She has said over and over that then Mayor Palin asked a "what if" question. So why the drama??

8. She is exciting. She's not entrenched. She's new on the scene. Love it. Love it. Love it.

So here you have it...my opinion. It is what it is. I know you won't like it, cause it isn't the same as yours. "

I didn't mean to end up prepping for this, but tomorrow, I have an 'interview' with an organization around here to help register voters, and get Obama elected.

I inquired because
1) I'm flat fucking broke
2) McCain in office would be bad enough. The thought of Palin as backup to McCain scares me worse than the thought of being the victim of several violent crimes.
