For you knob people. It just sounds to me like your parents were poor/cheap. I remember our tv from the early to mid eighties had a remote and non-knob remote. We also had cable and HBO (I used to love the star warsish hbo sequence).

printing was not easy back in the day and took forever....you also had to take the sides off of each piece of paper once in printed and also remove the attached pages once it was finished.

We had a Commodore 64...then an IBM clone running DOS

and then i remember the advent of Windows

and then Windows '95

Quote :
"we had an antenna on the top of the house that we could rotate via a control box, in order to tune in a particular channel on TV...

remember that shit? three major channels on the VHF knob, then the others would have to be on the UHF knob.

"

"I also remember when the microwave became popular.

yeah, i know they were around before i can remember, but i do remember when "everyone" got them.

Quote :
"CD player, too!

Weird shit"

shit, i remember jumping around and making records skip

and I remember having Weezer's "blue album" and REM's "Monster" on cassette tape (the CD was the way to go by this point, but i didn't have a CD player yet)

Quote :
"E.T. was playing at the drive-in

my dad took me to the theater to see E.T. i was really, really little, though.

Quote :
"We had a Beta VCR

"

we never had Beta, but i remember both formats. you'd go to the video store and see a video you wanted, and Mom would say "they only have it in Beta...it won't work in our VCR."

I also remember going to the video store to rent a huge-ass camcorder for Christmas and stuff.

Quote :
"MTV showed music videos

that i wasn't allowed to watch

although i distinctly remember watching Pauly Shore and MTV Spring Break and some Motley Crue and Aerosmith videos when I went to the beach with my friend (Mark Smith, a few of you on here probably know him. He died of cancer a few years ago) and his family. His dad had a BMW E30, which I thought made him the richest man in town. Now college kids buy them as racetrack toys, haha.

Quote :
"... the name OJ Simpson didn't have a negative connotation

haha, that doesn't make you old school.

I remember jokes being made about my friend's white Bronco...in 11th grade.

yeah, I remember watching Star Wars at YMCA summer camp

haha, i didn't know the name had changed. i've always called it the Memorial Auditorium.

The house we moved in to has one of these still.

We are leaving it there for nostalgia.

Hahah, I remember getting yelled at for jumping/running while records were playing. But, that also happened in high school--dad's a bit of an audiophile w/ an extensive record collection. I don't remember not having a cd player. He bought one soon after they came out. Oddly, he still has it, and it plays burned cds. We had a tape player, but it was really only used to copy cd's or records onto tape for the car (more specifically road trips (mix tapes etc (think "As Good as it Gets" (hahaha (just because (cold meds)))))).

Holy crap.. the memories...

I remember:

-McDonald's burgers came in styrofoam containers (I also remember winning a t-shirt for doing the whole Menu Song correctly).
-All Wendy's had salad bars.
-Stretch Armstrong toys
-Coleco (playing Pitfall and Kaboom!)
-A monster toy where it was a monster with a clear belly that was filled with slime and plastic guts that you could dissect. Can't remember the name though.
-My Buddy
-Tonka trucks were metal and could handle being riden down a flight of stairs.
-more to come...

^ that reminds me of when my sister had a car radio that could be taken out and she'd walk around the mall or whatever with a whole radio by the handle... then came the bag phone... lol.

All of this was in her Renault Fuego. And I remember my brother having an AMC Pacer.

I'm so old, I remember smoking cigarettes in McDonalds. they had their little aluminum foil ashtrays with the "M" logo stamped in it. we used to steal them to use at my friends' houses.

and it wasn't just a smoking "section" i remember the whole damn stores were smoking. everywhere. you would walk right up to the counter to order while smoking a cigarette.

I mean, to NOT be able to smoke, in a McDonalds or anywhere else, well that was just damn inconceivable....

of course, the "non-smoking section" did come later. and all the paranoid individual-rights agitators ranted and raved about how accommodating the non-smokers with their special section was a slippery slope in the ultimate goal to criminalize smokers everywhere. needless to say, no one believed those crazy moonbats.
