hilarious - most of the time state fans wouldn't even care about playing ECU and call it a non-rivalry. now there is talk of pep rallies? funny how tides change when one team is doing well and the other poorly.
i love both teams - ecu is my hometown school and NCSU pays the bills. i think both teams need the win and i'll be cheering for anyone who shows effort. 9/16/2008 7:23:53 AM |

Most of the time ECU isn't ranked. It's an in state game against a ranked opponent. That's as good a game as NCSU is getting this year, but that doesn't make for a rivalry.
If I can pull for a team when we aren't playing against them I don't consider them a rival. Maybe I'm the only one.

^^ The pep rallies are something that will become customary for every game, so it's not being held just b/c ECU is good this year. Did you not read the articles? Notre Dame holds a pep rally the night before every game. Ohio State has their skull sessions a few hours before a game. I'm glad that they are trying to do something to build school spirit and I wish they would have had these when I was in school. Plus I'm sure there will be free food. 9/16/2008 7:33:36 AM |

i'd say its more of rivalry recently than UNC.
and who gives a shit if its a "rivalry" or not?
to me, when you play a team thats just down the road from you in the same state, in the same NCAA division, there's automatically a sense of rivalry and pride associated with that.
while NCState fans are busy saying "ECU is not our rival", VT and West Virginia are saying..."damn...ECU is becoming our rival because they are good"
give ECU some credit. for the longest time they have scheduled good big time teams and have played anyone...
some ncstate fans need to get off this ego trip 9/16/2008 10:44:30 AM |

Unless you were at NCSU/ECU in the 80s, nobody from NCSU cares about ECU. Nowadays we just don't want to hear your shit. I swear ECU fans treat beating NCSU like winning the national championship, no matter how bad we are. I would say our main rival in UNC, but we have a rivalry with Duke, Wake, and ECU.
To me, a rivalry is formed when two sides really don't like each other and they should play year in and year out. Also have some connection i.e. borders (Kansas-Missouri) similar importance in something (State-Clemson ->Textile Bowl) While playing a team in-state is important, for it to be a rivalry you need to play every year (State-ECU baseball)

They've also beat us 5 out of the last 8, 7 of the last 12, but overall it's 15-10 NCSU. I'd definitely call them a rival, they're in-state, both teams have won a good amount of wins, and I'm pretty sure most State fans don't really like them. Sounds good enough for me.

A rivalry is the fact that I want to play UNC every year, maybe twice, just to try and beat them. On the other hand, I would be happy if we never played ECU again...that doesn't constitute a rivalry, just disgust. I'm from around greenville, and a large percentage of ECU football fans never went to college or barely got out of a comm college somewhere. I hate that place. 9/16/2008 4:46:56 PM |

^^^I've never understood this kind of hate
My best friend's father owns a tire store just outside Raleigh and you'll find more ncstate fans in garner, smithfield, clayton & johnston county (w/ no ties to the school whatsoever) than tiny greenville. It doesn't make them any less of a fan to me than a current student. Not everybody can attend college but what's wrong with a community rallying behind it? Some of them actually attend the games & pump money into the program's gas tank.
You find this at any big school around the country

If I call someone a redneck then it's true, whether they are an ECU, UNC, or even a State fan. I am the farthest thing from a redneck and I think I have enough experience with them to recognize them. I hate that people call State fans rednecks when in reality only a small portion of our fans are rednecks. In reality there are probably more redneck UNC fans when you factor in the Wal-Mart Nation (just take a drive around Gastonia ). I'm glad I don't live in the eastern part of the state though. I don't know why but nearly every person that I've met that is from east of Raleigh that doesn't live at the beach is pretty country.
I don't take fault with someone that isn't an alum, but is from the area and actually goes to games quite often.

Now I haven't called ECU fans rednecks in this thread. Go back and look at my posts. I know some ECU people and only one is a redneck (and he's the only one that's originally from the eastern part of the state). I'm just stating that if I call someone a redneck then they are most definitely a redneck. If they look, sound, and act like a redneck, then they are most likely a redneck. The fact that some State fans on here have called some ECU fans rednecks doesn't require you to say something to the effect of "that's funny coming from a State fan". Perhaps the only ECU fans they know are rednecks and that is why they have the perception that the Pirate fanbase is full of rednecks.
