it really just means its over... whoever said it is just dancing around the issue of breaking up.

also its a euphemism for a license to cheat

It all depends on the relationship. You need to talk to him to find out what being on a break means and to settle some terms of the break (like whether or not fucking around is allowed.)

It could be a stepping stone to breaking up.

It could mean he wants to fuck around and see if you're worth keeping.

It could mean he has some personal issues to work on and he needs time to do it. These things tend to get pushed aside when there is a girl on your couch every single night.

It could mean that he has some big life decisions to make and the stress of the relationship is holding him back from making those decisions or achieving some goals he has set for himself.

Sometimes it's just a break

Sometimes it's more.

I'll tell you what my friends told me when I first considered going on a break with my (now ex) girlfriend. They don't usually end well. They were right, but FWIW I'm better off than I was when I was still in the relationship. Holding on to someone just because you can't imagine being without them isn't a good reason to stay in a relationship. It'll hurt like hell at first, but once you're a couple of months out and you're able to get perspective, you'll realize it was for the best.

Yes

And on that note...my break with my bf really was. I mean, I broke up with him because he was being retarded and wishy-washy, and I wasn't going to put up with that shit. Basically, he was having a mini 'oh.wow.sometimes.life.sucks.i.don't.like.the.things.that.have.happened.recently.do.i.REALLY.want.herIDONTKNOW' crisis.

So, I broke up with him, we parted ways, stayed close (apparently, this told everyone BUT us that we weren't done), and got back together. Permanently, it seems.

If he's asking for a break, give it to him. Don't try and figure out what it is. You'll know soon enough, and you can't change it.

The gentleman would like to fuck other women. If he finds out that fucking other women requires too much work, he will return to you and end the break until such time as he thinks fucking other women is worth the trouble. This will happen because:

1) You have become more of a shrew, so the acceptable amount of trouble he's willing to go through increases.
2) Other women express more interest in him, so the amount of trouble required decreases to an acceptable level.

A few years ago I summed up the concept in this manner, because words are hard and stuff:

It means it's over, or you need to figure shit out. Either way, just go your seperate ways and see where you are at in a few months. You will either move on or you will get back togeither.

been there done this and just skimming the thread i can agree with most people.

it means that other person is childish and selfish. they want to sow those wild oats (read: sleep with other people) and when they realize what they had to begin with was perfect they want to be able to come back like nothing ever happened.

i had my heart broken trying to let a girl pull that shit over on me. never again. its not worth your time

doesn't change my mind that the break card is one of the stupidest things ever.

add: i did just read her reasoning. if the guys acts that way and is 2 hours away just break up. He'll figure his shit out and if it's meant to be he'll straighten out and come back. this break stuff just strings along and problems never really get solved.

in my opinion, anything more than separate vacations pretty much disqualifies the relationship from being considered "serious"

or "healthy"
