I crate trained my beagle/lab mix (Zella). Initially, I put the crate upstairs in my master bath so I could rush over if she was whining to take her out. I learned quickly that she grew accustomed to her little den and would run up there randomly to grab toys and possibly piddle. So, I started keeping the crate downstairs since I only go upstairs to sleep. I slept on the sofa the first couple nights while she was downstairs she started sleeping through the night after about the 1st week. I got her at 10 weeks and I must be very lucky that she wasn't a big whiner at night.
From time to time I let her sleep with me...she's a year old now...but she has no problems going in her crate most of the time. And if you feel guilty, you shouldn't, b/c they basically sleep the entire time.

Since this has been bumped...
I hate trimming my dogs nails. I have a Basset and a Cairn Terrier, and both have nails you cant really see the quick through. Their nails are long because i hate cutting them...and i think the quick has grown further than it should have because of this. Im going to have to "train it back" by cutting a bit every week I guess.
1) How often does everyone trim their dogs nails? 2) What do you use? I use the "scissor" style clippers. Heard not to use the "guillotine" style...not sure why that is. Does anyone use a dremel? Is that easier/safer? I dont own a dremel, but id buy one if it greatly reduced the probability I hacked off my dogs nails too far and hurt them.
I try to take small clips and watch for the consistency of his nail to change where ive clipped it... I just suck at it, apparently. I havent hurt the dogs but a few times, but im just so hesitant to cut their nails, I think Ive done more harm than good at this point.
Any secret to it? Clip them more often and take less off?
