" Logjam or Logtown
Somebody who should know told me today that the News and Record misnamed a recent drug bust operation in Rockingham County. I posted yesterday on an article revealing that a murder victim in Reidsville last week was the top suspect in a Rockingham County sweep of drug dealers. The News and Record identified the sweep as "Operation Logjam." I asked about it today and was told it was in fact called Operation Logtown, but that is not officially official. Logtown is an area outside Eden just inside the Virginia line long known as an entry point for illegal drugs into Rockingham County. In fact, US News and World Report featured the notorious locale on its pages about ten years ago. Today they'll let you read the lead, but you'll have to pay to read the rest. I thought about buying it, but they won't allow me to transmit it electronically. Here's what I can link to."

"Crack Invades a Small Town
Sandy Level, Va., is trying to fight back, but cocaine is winning
By Victoria Pope
Posted 4/14/96

The isolated little town is no match for crack cocaine. County police are outnumbered and outgunned by the young drug dealers, and when dealers are arrested, new ones instantly take their places. Dwindling county budgets mean fewer police and less enforcement, fewer social workers and less rehabilitation. When they are caught, dealers are released from prison quickly, and the cycle of lawlessness starts over again. All Sandy Level has is a few determined citizens, a history of cohesiveness and some fragile community pride. It is an uneven contest.

The most recent FBI statistics, released in December, show a 3 percent increase in rural crime nationwide. And while homicides declined dramatically in cities and suburbs, they grew by 3 percent in rural areas. Criminologists say that as urban drug markets mature and turf battles among drug lords decline in the cities, America's small towns are becoming growth markets. A national survey of police chiefs by pollster Peter Hart found that 47 percent of small-town chiefs consider drugs an "extremely serious" or "quite serious"problem. Nearly two thirds of them say their drug problems have increased in the last five years.

Sandy Level's 2 square miles don't look dangerous. Ranch houses and mobile homes stand close to the main road, state Route 610, also known as Axton Road, on a stretch of land from Eden to Martinsville, Va., known as the Old Belt--the bright-leaf tobacco growing region. After the Civil War, freed blacks dispersed, settling in this unincorporated town and adjacent areas. They built their own houses, usually cabins made of logs. As a result, people thereabouts--some say it was the white lumber-mill owners--started calling the backwoods community "Logtown." Most of the cabins were covered with more-modern siding years ago, but the nickname stuck. So have Sandy Level's other historic traits: It is small (pop. 800), poor, rural and African-American.

The nip joint. Sandy Level has no public halls, unless its churches--St. John's Baptist and Gospel Light United Holiness--are counted. For night life, there is the nip joint (local slang for a neighborhood bar)--a concrete shell painted kelly green where the older men go to gamble and drink moonshine. Across the front someone has scribbled the initials of the Nation of Islam in red paint. The houses around the nip joint are unremarkable, save for an occasional barrel of burning trash. Rottweilers bark on the crest of a hill, chained to a tree next to a trailer. To the south, Sandy Level ends with a combination gas station and grocery--the town's only legal commercial enterprise--a few miles from the North Carolina line. Next to it, an abandoned cinder-block church has a sign that still reads: "Prepare to meet God."

A stream of cars cruises into Sandy Level from North Carolina. Some people come to buy Virginia lottery tickets. But many come to buy drugs. Most are whites, and because a hit of crack wears off quickly, they often reappear to buy a second or third $20 rock. A man with a careworn face approached a group of policemen in front of the gas station one recent Saturday night and blurted out: "My daughter is a dopehead." He drove up from Eden because she is missing, he said, and he wanted help finding her."
