Cullen absence 'precautionary'

Quote :
"

It was an unsettling moment for Canes coach Peter Laviolette and the Hurricanes players -- center Matt Cullen taking a big hit and then being pulled from the game.

Cullen was blindsided by the Flyers' Nathan Guenin in the first period and did not play the rest of the game. Cullen missed several games last season because of vision problems after a pair of concussions.

"They checked his head for concussion symptoms and everything seemed positive and clear,'' Laviolette said. "It was more precautionary than anything else.''

As pleased as I am to see the boys grab a W, there are some unfortunate negatives.

Injuries:

These things continue to pile up. I think one of the reasons we've seen a few bad games is because quite frankly, we're without a lot of our starting lineup... even our top six and top four.

Lack of offense:

I mean, one could probably tack this up to not having our starters in so far this season, but today's 1-0 victory... while it's good to win, it's just a preseason game. I'd rather see a 7-5 loss in the preseason than a 1-0 win. Hopefully the guys can put a few more pucks in the net.

Goaltending:

Mixed emotions on this. Leighton looks great, but Ward still has yet to get that 06 post-season form back. Hopefully the kid can get his head in the game. Otherwise, we might see a lot more split duties than we did from John "Hey I've got a chick on my helmet" Grahame.

All this being said, I'm still hopeful. Go Canes Go!

"RALEIGH, N.C. -- Carolina Hurricanes co-owner Thomas Thewes has died.

The team said Monday that Thewes, a general partner, died Sunday after a two-year fight with leukemia. He was 76.

Thewes and Peter Karmanos Jr. were two of the founders of Compuware, a Detroit-based software company. The two also acquired the Hartford Whalers in 1994 and moved the franchise to North Carolina three years later.

Thewes also was a co-owner of the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League and the ECHL's Florida Everblades.

He is survived by his wife, six children and 20 grandchildren. Services are scheduled for this week in Michigan.

"RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that forward Jeff O’Neill has decided to end his bid to make the Hurricanes’ roster. O’Neill and team management met after Sunday’s home game against Philadelphia, reaching a mutual agreement to release the former Hurricanes’ first-round pick from training camp.

The Hurricanes training camp roster now stands at 32 players. Carolina will travel to Nashville on Thursday to take on the Predators in an 8 p.m. match-up, before concluding its exhibition schedule on Sunday when the Hurricanes host the Predators at 3 p.m. at the RBC Center."

I doubt that.

I would assume he was told that he had no chance of making the roster or that they would only be willing to sign him to a 2-way deal, so he stepped aside.

Doubtful that you can find anymore of the canes' preseason games on tv. There have been a few on direct feed from the jumbotrons at the games via the web.
