I've setup Gmail on my HTC Touch Pro. My Gmail is set to send mail as my unity account. However, mail sent from my phone uses my Gmail address and not my NCSU address. Anyone know of a workaround?

So I went into the Sprint store today with my somewhat wonky Mogul (intermittent locking up issues, alt/blue dot key sometimes didn't work, 2 buttons had fallen off). I did spring for the protection plan/insurance, so I figured they would probably give me a refurb'ed Mogul or something (in which case I was going to try to make the argument for at least a brand new one, but didn't know if I'd achieve success.)

I walked out with a Touch Pro. The kicker? I didn't even have to ask. The guy told me they didn't have any Moguls left in stock, so he just went ahead and transferred my data over to a Touch Pro. My reaction was definitely

Now I have to figure out how to use it since they've moved pretty much everything...

^So because I used the insurance that I pay extra for to replace a defective device, they may have put me on a new contract without telling me? That would be rather disappointing. I'll have to check on that.

Actually just checked on the web site, and nope--expiration date for subscriber agreement is still 8/14/09. I remain a happy customer.

I will say though, based on a few days usage, I *love* the Touch Pro. They fixed a lot of the things that really annoyed me about the mogul (like the ability to close programs without going into the control panel, separate number keys on the hardware keyboard, much much nicer screen), and I like the touchflow interface even if it is a bit slow. Opera mobile is taking me a little while to get used to though...

Looking at these on Altell, I'm assuming you need to add a data plan? If so, what's that cost?

^ Alltel's website will outline the data plans for you. Everything you need to know to figure out your cost is on their site so long as it's an individual plan and not a complex business or family plan.

You can do that in the mogul.. its a WM6 feature not a phone specific feature..

I'm trying hard as tits to get eCare to replace my mogul with a touch pro. So far since I just scored it in June from iCare (pretty much as high as you can get on the support chain) for 200 bones billed to the account, they're only giving me a 75.00 rebate.

And since my second line has an ESN attached to it (my rep sounded cute as fuck and she was having so much trouble with the dummy ESN that someone was holding my line with, I just gave her a valid one to use) it's technically not available for any of the new customer incentives. Bullshit.

I have the extension of this chick with the iCare dept but I feel bad calling for simple crap that the reps should be able to handle.

For those of you who have the touch pro--have you tried using the alarm yet? I use my alarm frequently, if I want to nap or as a backup for my alarm clock etc, and twice now the alarm will go off, but the alarm bell notification will not appear on the home screen. When this happens, the alarm keeps repeating once per minute, even if you go into the alarms panel and uncheck the box for that alarm; I've had to turn the phone off to stop the alarm. Anyone else seen something like this?

Through work I get a discount on Sprint that seems too good to pass up. I'm thinking about the following:

Everything Data - Unlimited Messaging, Mobile Internet, and 450 anytime minutes - $52.99/mo

However, it only looks like the HTC Touch Diamond is available, not the Pro. Does anyone have any information on why the Pro is better than the Diamond?

so the htc pro looks sweet. i currently have the touch, i've had it for a year now. i'm really quite over it - i've had different issues on and off over the course of the year.

- just barely dropped it and the screen busted. (my fault, duh, but seriously, it fell like a foot)
- first insurance replacement was fuxored
- second insurance replacement had a hot pixel in the bottom corner, but after being without a phone for almost a week, i didn't bitch
- nye i woke up to that phone's screen having completely stopped working.
- that replacement phone (fortunately, sprint store gave me a replacement refurb touch on nye no charge) has consistently had spurts of not responding to touch, or needing very strong/hard presses to get it responding
- that phone also freezes up randomly (rarely, but it's happened)

anyone know a way for me to smooth talk sprint into giving me a pro? i realized i don't want to only depend on a touch screen for my phone.

at the moment, i'm only eligible for $75/upgrade, and the pro is freakin $500+ on the sprint site.

I have a Touch Pro and have been frequenting sprintusers.com to watch opinions of it. I've had HTC phones for a while and here's my thoughts on it.
1. The Complaint on Battery Life has to partly with a problem I see in the design of it's operating system. When you close a program, for instance a program that runs GPS, Data Services, Bluetooth, etc... the program does not really close unless you use the programs Close Program or Exit feature. You can to go up into the list at the top right corner and end programs that are running individually. I think this is a bit odd but I've caught myself not closing a program and it drains the battery. howeverIf you manage this the phone runs on a single charge with regular phone calls for me for 3 days. I think this is pretty awesome for a phone with as many features.
2. My biggest gripe is the slowness of windows platforms. I bought my wife a blackberry and myself the HTC Touch Pro. I'm not going to get into comparing them but WM phones are laggy. I'm fine with it and I hope one day they will work this stuff out because it's more compatible with many of the things I need it to be. When I say laggy, let me explain to those who haven't seen this. When you turn the phone, it takes 2-3 seconds for the screen to catch up. If you close a program, it might take 1-2 seconds. When I open the messager program, it lags a bit as I type before the text starts to appear on the screen. It doesn't miss characters though.

Plus's in my book:
GPS is dead on. I geocache with the phone.
I use PDAnet and can use the phone as a modem for free
The Voice recogn. software works as well as the blackberry
Touch screen is dead on accurate. Screen is well lit.

Anyways, for those with other problems with the battery, I understand phone vary. Overall, I really like this phone though. I am excited about the upcoming HTC models and hoping those will work out some of the kinks.
By the way, I bought my phone for around $75 from Best Buy. Got my wifes Blackberry from best buy for free.
$200 sale price
-$125 - sold my PPC-6700 on craigslist.com.

i take it you don't know that this is an option in settings? in settings HTC includes a program called Task Manager that has an option to "minimize" the application when you click the X or to actually close it - i choose the one where it will close if you hold the X for a few seconds because that's what i prefer....

i imagine #2 is probably based on the fact that you don't close programs as needed - windows mobile does manage memory decently but has a few notable memory leaks in gwes.exe that aren't fixable and merely slightly manageable if you know how to code around the known problems - it sucks that some developers don't

the part about it lagging on characters is a known issue and nothing really can be done to fix that i believe - the main screen can be sped up if you reload it with a different rom - i prefer the custom ones you can make at ppckitchen.org

oh hai thread

I got an HTC Diamond touch for chistmas and have been lukewarm towards it. It has its great moments, and then its really shitty moments (like crashing when I try to make a phone call).

I've been using this forum for a lot of my questions and it has been a great resource, despite the offensive favicon:

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=66

I've used it to get some cool free games, an easy fix for the locked program quick access page (with the buttons and shit), and a registry fix to supposedly make the camera a lot better with faster shutter action.

Right now, the consensus about the battery life is that it runs on a shitty ROM. The battery will kill itself when its not running any other programs in the background. A lot of users advocate flashing new ROMs onto the Touch, but I'm pretty wary of bricking my phone. Anyone do that here?

The screen on my touch pro no longer responds to touch as of Saturday (I know, ironic, isn't it?) I didn't drop it or sit on it--only thing that could have contributed is I had it in my front pocket when I was leaning up against the fender of my car doing some work under the hood, but that shouldn't have been enough pressure to break it I wouldn't think (did the same thing with my old Mogul many times, no problem). Guess it's back to the sprint store for a replacement...

Also what brand of screen protectors do y'all use? I have some fellowes WriteRight ones, but they're fairly thick and are both a) hard to apply without bubbles and b)occasionally make the screen a little unresponsive.

Apparently a lot of people use the OEM Screen Protector. I might look into doing this:

Quote :
"Ok guys, ultimate pro tip.

I have a full body invisible shield on my Diamond. Great protection, but the tacky screen is hard to use with your fingers and impossible to use with the stylus.

**Put the OEM smooth screen protector on over the invisible shield sheet**

The sensitivity is fine. I can scroll smoothly just like the OEM protector alone. Jack up the sensitivity if you think you need too. Clarity is perfect, too: you don't notice that there's two on there.

Why both? I had just the OEM protector on my Vogue, and dropped it on the ground. It landed screen down, and while the protector took the brunt of the damage (thankfully), there were a couple of very minor scratches that made it through to the screen. If I'd had the IS on, it would have saved it completely. Also, as has been said, the OEM protector has a nasty habit of getting snagged and coming loose on a corner (happened to me as well): the IS will keep it from getting scratched before you notice this has happened."

I have an HTC Touch Pro through Alltel. It has Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi isn't regulated in any way. If you can connect with your laptop, you can connect with the Touch Pro. I will state that the Wi-Fi hits the battery hard.

The included browser is Opera Moble. Webpages look like the normally would within the limitations of the screen size of the phone. You can zoom in on pages in a similar fashion to the iPhone. I will note that I'm fairly that the Touch Pro has the highest resolution of any phone currently avaliable.

don't forget that alltel will eventually be fully integrated into Verizon. Right now there's a $100 difference between the prices of the HTC Touch Pro on alltel and verizon, not to mention the higher verizon plans.

only if it's before the full merger. Granted who knows how long that will take. Still think it's funny that verizon can now call alltel for free but alltel can't call verizon. Need to hurry up and get this billing shit integrated. Hmm...make that 150. alltel has the pro online for $199 after $100 mail-in rebate and it's $349 on verizon.

Anyone tried Skyfire? Currently in beta but it's supposed to be better than Opera mobile.

Like darkone said, wifi just uses the phone's on-board wireless internet card to connect to a wireless network. You won't be able to connect to the Alltel Data Connection dial-up without a data plan.

The HTC Touch Diamond is the same as the HTC Touch Pro, except without a slide out keyboard, and is considerably cheaper. You might want to consider that as well...the models are basically identical from what I gather, having very high resolution and all that.

How is Skyfire better than Opera? I'm not really sure what there is to improve on other than speed for a mobile browser...

Has anyone used a different media player, like maybe WinAmp or something? I tried to put the 'Price is Right Fail horns' on my quick access program list, but since it plays with Windows Media Player it is slow as hell and by the time it loads the comical timing is lost

The touch diamond has internal flash memory (I think either 4 GB or 8 GB) whereas the Pro comes with a 1 GB microSD but no built-in. I do not know if the diamond has a microSD slot.

However, even given that advantage, I love having the slide-out keyboard. Just so much easier to use than any on-screen keyboard (even a really good one like the iPhone's). The onscreen for the diamond/pro isn't bad at all, but it's no replacement for a hard keyboard. Plus the design on the Pro is way nicer than on some older HTC models like the mogul (for example, this one has dedicated number keys).

If there's an alltel/verizon question in getting the Touch, be sure to get it from alltel before the merger happens, I'd say. Evidently the verizon version is very subtly different (squared-off body, all black, 192 MB RAM vs 288 for the alltel/sprint versions, less keys on the keyboard) and there are reports, evidently, that it runs slower. The alltel and sprint versions are identical as far as I can tell.

Ok, I misspoke, no=small amount. I think 512MB ROM. Which is more than enough for contacts, ringtones, etc, and your usual assortment of pictures etc. If you try to use it as a music player or for other data storage, that's when it becomes an issue.

I've barely even touched the microSD card on mine, no problems with the 512MB so far, but I also have an ipod so I don't store mp3's on the phone.
