It'd be interesting to learn why this happened. Those kids might've just thrown their lives away, assuming the prosecution can build up a strong case (which there is one, I guess it just depends whether the judge will try them as adults).

Most black leaders have been saying that blacks need to bring THEMSELVES up. This was actually the basis of Obama's former pastor's message.

What doesn't help the black community though is people like you encouraging scorn for blacks because of situations like this. You're the whole reason that white people are still perceived as racist. I think it's interesting that everyone is rejecting the grandmother's comments out of hand. Hell, only one person in this thread (I think) has expressed even the slightest curiosity about how this fight got started and why she might have said that. Everyone has just assumed that she's full of it, trying to pass on responsibility because...why? Why is it that everyone is so sure on these points?

It's pretty obvious that these kids need to go to jail for assault. Not arguing that point. But it's entirely possible that Merwitz started the fight in a very real way. It's not even really clear from any of those arguments who threw the first punch. And while these answers almost certainly won't effect whether these three kids need to go away, or even for how long, it might do something to calm down the frothing-at-the-mouth outrage some of you people are letting take over here.

Honestly, while it's possible that he did something, I HIGHLY doubt that he threw a punch when it was 3 on 1 with kids that appear to be much bigger than he is. Honestly, it sounds more like he's a nerd or a good student and they picked on him trying to provoke a response. As soon as they got the response they wanted to "justify" stomping him, they did. They also might have done it for a gang initiation. Probably why they're smiling. They just got in y0.

Oh and the charges are really weak. I don't even know that they'll end up with felonies. They'll get away with this.

I went to a high school that was roughly 90% black, and I wouldn't say that the smarter black kids got ostracized for doing well in school. Some of the thugs might have cracked jokes on the bookworms in front of them, but then they'd turn right around and say that the bookworm was going to make something of themselves one day.

We also had a couple of white kids at my high school that embraced their hatred of intelligence more than any black person I ever met.
