I agree that these practices are unfair but I laugh at all the people who get screwed by them and keep their accounts open when there are other alternatives.

How does that saying go?

Screw me once shame on you, screw me twice......

I remember freaking the fuck out a few years back when my bank slapped me with a bunch of fees, but it only took once for me....if the checking account balance dips, it draws from savings and it's no big deal now.

I found I actually manage my money better when I use primarily cash....I'll pay bills, mortgage, etc. through the bank but tend to use cash for most day to day purchases

It's also helpful to bury a few gold bars in the back yard for emergencies; you can always shave off a few strips in exchange for bread / milk

wachovia refunded me my first overdraft charges I ever incurred. However, I used my overdraft protection a few times and realized that being charged $10 to spend my own money was ridiculous.

i just closed my wachovia account and I never plan to bank with them again. I was fortunate enough to be able to open a local government federal credit union account. LGFCU is more or less SECU. I use secu banks and I have the same cashpoints privileges as secu customers. As well, it costs .25 everytime I overdraft into my savings. That I can handle.

lol yeah I overdrafted once and they definitely take off as much as they can and pin as many penalties with 2 and 3 dollar transactions as possible.

OP: You could threaten to tell people that Wachovia is going insolvent and one self-fulfilling prophecy later, Wachovia is owned by Morgan Stanley.

I have not read the rest of this thread but. . .

I have had over $50,000 in CDs at Wachovia.
I have had overdraft fees through no fault of my own (holdings).
After the first one, they have refused to "give it back."

I pulled all of my money from Wachovia and had my husband do the same. Wachovia is the devil.

I'd just go into your branch and bitch them out. It's not really that difficult and if they have not forgiven any overdrafts this year, they'll probably forgive at least 2 maybe 3 or 4 (at most). Just be adamant and maybe threaten to close your account.

^ Yes I've had similiar experiences. I had a $50 hold on my account and $70 in it, and after like 5 more purchases I was close to $300 in the hole with them. That's when I switched to SECU.

I am getting charges for no reason right now at Wachovia. I am going to have it looked into. I think someone there thinks I don't look into my accounts, and notice that $$ starts missing.

YES.

Do not think that Wachovia has any sense of customer loyalty. I had a large amount of money with them via CDs because my father died when I was young and they handled my money for me until I turned 18. They were very unwilling to work with me over my piddly little checking account that was overdrawn by very little due to "holdings." I pulled my money out of there so fast your head would spin and went with SECU.

SECU is sooooooooooooo much better. I do not even have words.

wachovia = check i deposited on tuesday wasn't in account by friday night, i assumed it was, made several smallish purchases over the weekend (like 10 separate purchases, but nothing over $10), wound up with nearly $300 in overdraft fees that they were nice enough to waive $100 of.

I opened an account with Chase today because Wachovia only has like 8 god damn locations in New York City and I'm tired of paying $2 to use someone else's ATM and another 2-3 to Wachovia for the privilege

it is dumb to pay $5 to take out a $20

I've had problems with Wachovia not depositing a deposit when they should. I've simply called their customer service and gone up the food chain until someone gives me my money back.

I canceled my account long ago but I still hope they go under.

I just looked at my account to see if my direct deposit went in. Apparently I overdrafted by like a dollar for ONE purchase. Why the fuck did they charge me two overdraft fees?!??!?!?!

OR you could just not spend more money than you have in your account. That's FREE.

I'm a big fan of using credit cards for rewards and paying them in full every month. Getting 1 to 5% back is awesome.

Following up: I talked to a representative in the Raleigh wachovia. She said that I technically overdrafted for two purchases since the holds for both of those purchases overdrafte my account by $1.55. This occured before they posted on my account apparently when only one of the purchases put me over. She decided that, since I was just trying to understand why I got two overdraft charges for seemingly one purchase, she would refund the money that I overdrafted with which, according to her, should get rid of both of the overdraft charges. So, I won with Wachovia, somehow.

that's the way overdraft works, once you go over, they take every charge that is in your holds and take the most expensive purchases off first,

i.e., you have 20 dollars in your account, you buy a couple of meals, for 10 bucks, a gatorade for a dollar, and maybe a pack of cigarettes somewhere else for 4 bucks. not thinking, you turn around and put 10 dollars of gas in your car. So technically you should have -5 dollars with an overdraft charge for the gas??

no, they take the gas and the meals off first, in order to put you in the negative, so they can give you 2 overdraft charges. a 36 dollar gatorade, and a 39 dollar pack of cigarettes. My advice is to do overdraft production. Open a savings account with 100 bucks, leave it there, if you overdraft, they take a 10 dollar fee, transfer funds from your saving's account, and then refund the fee.

^^ I understand that now that I talked to someone and had them explain it to me. That's a pretty undercut way to do business, but I suppose it's legal even though I technically wasn't overdrafted with the first purchase. I got my money back either way, so I'm not going to worry about it anymore, I'm just going to make sure that it doesn't happen again.
