I keep saying I wanna run a 5K but I never get off my ass to train for it.

I have killer shin splints too

The Couch-to-5K Running Plan is something that I keep meaning to start, but never really get up to do it.

I'm thinking that next week when the dog is able to run around again I'm going to try jumping in.

^ that plan looks good to me!

you know, you may even start to like running. I used to hate it and I could barely run a mile. I google mapped a 3-mile route in my neighborhood. I'd run as far as I could then walk for a while and run again. It sucked at first (didn't help that it was blazing hot out) but after 2 weeks or so I started getting better! I improved every single time I ran! Improvement is great motivation, it was like hey this running stuff actually works

there's no better time to start running than fall - the weather is perfect! no excuses, young lady

PS get a good pair of running shoes. go to a store where they know what they're doing. I think there's one in Cameron Village. It'll cost about $100. Then you'll be motivated to run and justify your big purchase

best of luck to you! i know you can do it. i ran for my company in a series of 5Ks this past spring.

do you know the route of the 5K yet? it might be good if you get out there once a week and run the route of the race. it'll give you an idea of how to pace yourself in case there are some hills. it will also be a good way for you to see how much better you can run week after week

they changed the route of the Run of the Oaks this year and my first mile i did in under 8 minutes but then i realized we were slowly going downhill. once we got around the curve we were going back up hill for a good mile or so. i completed it in under 30 minutes but i would have had better time if i had known about the slow, upward hill at the end.

Athlete's Foot is in CV, I think; also Fleet Feet up on Wade Ave (next to Whole Foods) will hook you up. It can be expensive but it's worth it. I LOVE the shoes I get from them.

If it were that easy...

My feet are like WWW width (if they make such a thing). Depending on the brand and style, even double width are too narrow, right across the base of my toes. The wages of being fat...

I have *a* pair that will do for walking, but I can't run in them. On the day I was at the Grand Canyon, I still had to take them off a time or two.

FWIW, investing in a pair of New Balances is FTW.

Feel free to stop by the fitness suite if you have any questions.

We're also doing free body fat and blood pressure testing on the second Monday of every month. It's always nice to see your progress as numbers/data.

I would totally do this with you if I were in Raleigh. But you probably have way more cardiovascular endurance than I do.

It's kind of hard to make any progress towards this when walking is torture - never mind anything more. I'm literally gimping around work, dragging one foot on the carpet.

I did something, and I don't know what, that feels like shin splints, in that it's in the front of my lower legs, but instead of being from the knees down, it's more from the ankles up, and not mirrored. My left leg is far worse off than my right It's muscle soreness, and I have no idea what.

But my plans to go run after work? Not happening. I actually am going to take vicodin and some aleve when I get home. It's that bad

seriously, get a good pair of shoes. Hand-me-downs are the worst thing to use. You need a pair of shoes specifically designed for running, as well as a pair that match your feet. It's even more important since you admit to being overweight. Your knees and legs will thank you. I'd be willing to bet that what you are experiencing right now is due to having bad shoes.

but, good luck on the 5k. it's a rush when you finish something that you didn't think was possible.

^you are completely right on all but one count (this soreness being from bad shoes), and I know this.

I simply don't have $100-$130 to drop on shoes; if I did, I'd have already done it. Done it in the past, and never regretted it.

Whatever this soreness is isn't from exercising, since I was a shamefully lazy bastard yesterday

hell, I'll give u a hundred bux for shoes, then but, good luck!

u'll probably laugh at me, but where I live, the shoes are so much cheaper. I paid about 70bux for a pair of shoes that would have cost 120bux in raleigh. if you know anyone in the Augusta, GA area that u trust with that kind of dough, then I'd go look for a decent pair of shoes in Raleigh and tell them w what to get. just a suggestion

ahah.

I can't even bring myself to ask my bf or parents for that kind of money

I'm hoping I can find two or three models at one of the stores mentioned in here already, and then be able to find those exact ones online.

Back in high school, I had the most incredible, comfortable pair of NBs. I wanna say they were 401s. Or maybe that was the 2nd most comfortable pair I'd had. I simply didn't know what I had, back then.

the right shoes for running will totally make a difference

do everything you can to find appropriate shoes. the 5k isnt worth doing if you end up hurting yourself and quit running forever

when i started running i was wearing the totally wrong shoes and my toes fucking killed. i switched into better shoes and felt a massive difference

its good that you know about your feet too. when i went in to buy my shoes i was like yo whats up here is my foot. turns out i have high arches, narrow feet and thin heels... wtf! so im in a super stabalizer shoe

i know of a running shoe store in phoenix that sells slightly used running shoes for ab 50% off. they have a 30day guarantee on all their shoes and the ones that end up getting returned go on this special sale rack. maybe try to find something like that in the area?
