"

Yeah, kinda. At first they came out with this boot disc that you had to burn. You had to start the DC with that boot disc and then once it loaded you could just swap out discs for the game you wanted to play. It wasn't too long before someone found a way to put the important files from the boot disc onto game discs so no swapping was required.

Keep in mind that a full cd was around 700 MB. And most games for the DC were much smaller than that. 100-300MB was the norm. Even on dial up, you could let it run overnight and most of the time you could get one game per night. I was lucky enough to work at a place that had multiple T1 lines though. But no, blockbuster wouldn't work as the games still needed to be cracked properly in order to be burned. Keep in mind that Dreamcast games were actually produced onto proprietary GD-Rom discs which could go up to 1.2 Gigabytes in size and couldn't be read in normal CD-Rom drives without special drivers. It wasn't as simple as popping in a disc and making a copy.

"So if the games were so good, why didn't it survive? I still don't understand why it didn't take off."

Honestly, I'd say hype for the PS2 was a huge part of the Dreamcast's demise. It's really astonishing that an existing system would fall prey to the marketing of a yet-unreleased system, but that's exactly what happened. I think a lot of people got annoyed with what was perceived as Sega's flood of console releases after the Genesis, and they saw that a lot of those consoles didn't take off. People were comparing the severely weakened Sega to the then-juggernaut Sony, and it wasn't much of a competition.

It's the hype for the PS2 and the fact that said hype really hurt the Dreamcast which still makes me dislike the PS2 to this day. I really only bought the PS2 to get Metal Gear Solid 2, and that turned out to be a huge mistake. Over the life of the console, I think I only ever picked up 10 games. On the DC, however, I still have close to 30 which I would absolutely never want to part with.

It took me a while to realize it, but the Xbox sorta became the successor to the DC because it had so much in common with it in terms of functionality. I couldn't be much happier that the 360 is currently outperforming the PS3 for that sole reason. There will never be another DC, but the 360 is doing a fine enough job that I kinda feel like it's spiritually avenging the death of the DC.

Dreamcast failed because everybody and their grandma ripped cd's of games online.

more good games:

all the street fighters: alpha 3, 3rd strike, grand master challenge
Guilty Gear X
Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2
European Super League
Metropolis Street Racer
Confidential Mission (w/ the gun controller)

also, discjuggler 3 worked the best for me for backups.

now i am going to have to get it out and hook it up this weekend.
