I seriously doubt that, especially since you can find plenty of organizations pushing for change.

Statistically insignificant when coupled with the number of ex cons out there. That is why I used the word "typically".
To khcadwal, my point isn't that 70% wouldn't exercise their right, it's that the majority aren't going to be pushing to have the laws changed.

There are reasons felons aren’t allowed to vote and I support them. Yes people can change, but often times people don't. I am not sure I want someone convicted of heinous crimes voting because who's to say they aren't going to be voting for whoever is going to make it easier for them to get away with their old habits? Yes people should have rights here and voting is a very precious one, but if you mess that up it's your fault, not the laws. And it makes sense Obama is going for this, he wants to make it where communities aren't informed of a convicted sex offender living in their community. I personally want to know if that happens, but I'm sure that sex offender who rather not be known so his next target isn't as suspicious. 10/7/2008 1:45:35 PM |

Quote : | "Wouldnt it be better if only the educated voted? Why have a bunch of dumbasses voting and not know what the fuck they are voting for?" |
How educated/intelligent do you have to be? If we're basing it on education, doesn't that discriminate against people who cannot afford higher education? Let's say you have a test for it. What do you tell the people who scored one point too low to vote? "Sorry guys, close, maybe in four years!" Do you think the educated generally know what they're voting for? My well-educated and intelligent roommate is voting for president based on whose campaign ad he sees last. His girlfriend is also educated and intelligent and is considering voting for McCain just because there's a woman on the ticket. At the end of the day it wouldn't surprise me if uneducated people were about as likely to find out about the issues that matter to them (even if it is just guns, taxes, and evolution in schools) and vote accordingly, which is more than I can say for those two.

You realize that John McCain has been pretty consistently "anti-torture," right? What with him having been, you know, repeatedly tortured for years. Or are you such a dipshit that you just associate things Bush supports with all Republicans?
Quote : | "chronically homeless OR people that let snakes loose in church. drug abuser OR people who think dinosaurs weren't real." |
So given the choice between:
1) A guy who thinks dinosaurs weren't real, and 2) A guy who thinks he is talking to a dinosaur right now
You'll take option (2)?10/7/2008 1:51:15 PM |

I think to decide if someone is "educated" enough to vote should be simple. No, it should have nothing to do with school and how far ahead in school you went, but rather your knowledge of the canidates. You sohuld have to know a certain amount about all the candiates and what they support. And not just the stupid bullshit of a few things that they throw out there to get votes, but basically test people on their knowledge of everything they support/disagree with and what bills they have assisted in passing/denying. I can guarentee you half of the Obama voters have no idea some of the shit he supports. And I guess honestly the same can be said about McCain voters too.

No I've heard of them. And never have I said you shouldnt be able to vote based upon race or gender. Hell I wouldnt be able to vote cause Im a girl. Thats not the issue. It's uniformed people voting that's the issue. 10/7/2008 2:40:19 PM |

in the South they used to have "literacy tests" as a qualification for voting. would you pass?

Again, that was done to prevent blacks from voting, not based on actual knowledge of the canidates. Do you know what your canidate stands for/against? If not, then don't vote. And I will repeat it again: Never have I said you shouldnt be able to vote based upon race or gender. Hell I wouldnt be able to vote cause Im a girl. Thats not the issue. I'd have no problem with people's votes being weighted proportionally to what percentage of their income that they pay in taxes
Want to tax one group of people 4 times as much as another? Fine, their votes are weighted so that they count 4 times as much
Don't pay any taxes? Get a job and start contributing to society and then you can vote
If 20% of the population is going to be asked to bear the burden of supporting the other 80% then that 20% should have a larger say in how that money is being spent10/7/2008 3:57:09 PM |

EXACTLY.
to be able to vote as a felon you have to have SERVED your time. and some states require felons to go through different "restorative" steps. its not like they're voting from prison here. and do you know how many felonies there are?? there are plenty of intelligent people sitting in prison. there are also unintelligent people. just like there are both intelligent and unintelligent people outside of prison.
this just doesn't make sense. you people are so terrified of socialism, yet you seem really eager to start taking away individual rights.
you'd be surprised at some of the people that come out to vote. people that don't know the current N.C. governor, etc. for having so much fear and paranoia, you don't seem to realize what a dangerous path you start heading down when you want to start rationing fundamental rights.

Intellegent or not, why wouldn't they do whatever it takes to make it easier for them to continue on with bad old habits. Be it drug related crimes, sex offences, assualt and/or murder, white collar crimes, etc. Why would they not want to vote for someone who is going to make it easier to commit these crimes? Yes they should have certain rights, but I should too and my safety is pretty damn important to me and so is the safety of people I care about. Sorry I don't want a bunch of sex offenders voting for someone like Obama just so they can live in MY community without my knowledge. Just saying.... 10/7/2008 7:22:25 PM |
