you people are a bunch of ungrateful sheep.

Chuck Amato did great things here at NC State. Everybody should give him respect, even if he did have a couple of off years.

I respect what he did at NC State...but it sounds like he's taking little shots at the program right now. I personally think we gave him two or three more years than we should have. He should be grateful that we gave him an opportunity. It's not our fault he fucked it up.

I think we can all agree he did great things for our facilities but that he wasn't a good coach. Anyone who tries to say he was a good head coach is just wrong.

coming from someone who didnt move to NC until 2002, NC State was completely unknown nationally until Amato and P. Riv., good or bad they should both get a lot of credit for making State relevant nationally (at least for a little bit)

I seem to remember a similar statement from Amato last year. I guess Chuck will hold his yearly "I hold no grudges" press conference every time we play FSU in football.

I liked Amato. He has a true love for the university, I thought he "got it" as far as the fanbase goes. His downfall was two fold, one being that he couldn't keep quality assistants. Constantly having to replace coaches leads to instability on a staff. The great coaches can keep their staffs relatively in tact, and Amato, it is said, was a mircro manager to the max and wouldn't let his coaches coach.

The 2nd being a backlash from those who loved Herb Sendek and were miffed that he left in what they saw as a good coaching being run off. It seemed that there was an interesting rift in the fanbase with those who "took sides" as it were with regards to their like and dislike of Herb and Amato. When Herb left, some saw Amato's firing as being some kind of retribution.

Amato did a lot of things right for NC State. He did raise the status of the program and brought a lot of excitement to campus but ultimately couldn't sustain it. In his last season, we were constantly outcoached and outplayed. Could have Amato turned it around? We'll never know.

I certainly wish Coach Amato well, and I am grateful for what he was able to accomplish at NC State.

Anyone who doesn't have the ability to look at the two separate from each other is an idiot and should be treated as such.

Admittedly, I wanted Herb to stay. I think we are in a better position as a program right now with Herb then we are with Sidney. Just my opinion and anyone who calls me an idiot can fuck off.

I thought Chuck Amato had lost complete control of the program and recruiting had fallen off. His TERRIBLE last season was the nail in the coffin.

The two situations were totally different. One didn't reach the lofty expectations of the fanbase and the other completely blew up...

I kind of see the point you're trying to make, but I think you're interpreting it wrong.

I think I might have been a little upset between the way the two were being treated because I think Chuck got a little more slack from the fans because he was so personable, flashy, and talked a big talk...whereas it was much easier for the fans to gang up on Herb. But I don't think any of the fans took it out on Chuck...they just might have defended Herb a little more.

But when it came down to it...Chuck turned out to be a below average coach. And to the person who mentioned earlier discounting Rivers impact by comparing him to other great QBs that didn't really "make" programs....Rivers was our starting quarterback for 4 years.....4 years. I'm sure you can go back and find a four year stretch in football where we had similar records and success...but you won't see it centered around one person. Chuck's time here would have been cut in half had he not had Rivers.

And as mentioned earlier...his recruiting was struggling the last few years. And even before that, he got most of the big names at the skill positions. His offensive line and linebacker recruiting was down right atrocious.

Talent and football team-wise...MOC left the program in a lot better shape than Chuck did. I'll thank him for being an alumni and giving his all and doing his part in getting our facility upgrades. But I can't thank him for improving our program...because I can't honestly say he did.

^ you are out of your fucking mind. Chuck did everything that he did pretty much with MOC's players, man. Once CHUCK'S players got in, that's when shit it the fan. The reason "O'Cain didn't have any NFL players" is because all of the players that he recruited that went to the NFL played for Chuck. so give me a fucking break

^^ wrong. Our current best NFL players were all MOC recruits: Rivers, Holt, Cotchery, and Adrian Wilson. I believe Locklear came in under MOC as well. Mario is the only Chuck recruit doing big things in the NFL right now. I mean, some of Chuck's guys, like Tank, McCargo and Lawson, just need some more time to develop, but our current stars were here because of MOC.

Buntings problem never was recruiting, it was coaching. Butch has put together a staff that can coach the recruits that Bunting brought in.

we'll be fine, just give it time. TOB can coach, his time at BC proved that much.

you know that bowl selection has more to do with potential ticket sales than actual on field performance.

NCSU at 6-6 would go to a better bowl than an 8-4 BC team just because we would fill a stadium up, while BC would bring 6 or 7 people total.

and if you're going to dis TOB for coaching in a crappy conference, chief butch's conference tenure matches TOB's.

Funny how some of you get onto people about defending Chuck and yet when I defend Herb on this board, I get flamed and lashed at.

What Herb did for this school>what Chuck did.

Herb took a LAST place program and consistently finished top 4 in the ACC in basketball.

Chuck took a middle of the road ACC team and left with a bottom tier division ACC team.

I'm proud to have Chuck Amato as a fellow alumnus. He is a good man, a smart man, and did A LOT for NC State University.

BUT....

Chuck Amato also was a difficult man. He couldn't keep assistants, he was stubborn, he alienated boosters, University officials, and even players. Not to mention the media. His abrasive personality, hubris, and attitude- not his competence- was his major problem. Chuck COULD have been a legendary coach at NC State. He WAS a good coach, but the Head Coaching position requires one to "coach coaches"... which is something Chuck Amato failed to do. He lost assistants left and right. It was like a revolving door of assistant coaches. Losing Buddy Green (someone who loved NCSU) was a huge blow. In the last four years of his tenure, normalcy did not exist. Even in 2003, things started to implode within his staff. In my opinion, it began with the 2003 meltdown against Wake Forest.

I got the chance to hang out with a FSU booster and editor of the Osceola last week at the Miami/FSU game. I asked about Chuck and he lit up. He told me what a brilliant man Amato can be. BUT how he is despised by many of his fellow assistants at FSU. Much to the chagrin of FSU assistants, Amato was hired back. Not because of a lack of coaching ability- but because he is so difficult to be around and his overblown ego. I was told stories of near fist-fights between Amato and other coaches, including Mickey Andrews prior to the 1999 National Championship. It is my understanding that Amato was a strict disciplinarian at FSU and did that very well. But from a head coaching standpoint- he was just not capable of instilling discipline in players through his staff.

Chuck did a lot of great things and should be remembered moreso in a positive light. But he just couldn't keep a consistent staff and couldn't lead leaders.

I would see Amato out at wrestling matches when I went to State. I always thought it was cool that he went out of his way to support the team.

So one particular time, I was walking out when I looked to my left and saw Amato exiting alongside me. This was around the time the team had returned from their bowl win over Kansas (Rivers' senior year). Casually, I said something along the lines of "good game coach, that was a fun one to watch." Upon hearing it, Amato stopped dead in his tracks, looked at me as if my hair were on fire, rolled his eyes, then walked away.

I was left thinking WTF just happened here. Weird moment.
