even without a day job I have found it trivial to maintain my quality of life with random side jobs

in fact I can work like 10 hours a week at my contract rates and earn my full time salary, minus benefits that are irrelevant because I am young and healthy

Even so, it's the truth. If you're poor, examine your expenditures and employment. Systematically increase your value as an employee while decreasing your cost of living. The answer isn't the same for everyone and nobody can tell you what's right for you, but I guarantee there is a an optimal path for every individual, and poor people very rarely approach that optimal solution, for whatever reason. It's not about the color of your skin, your lifestyle, whatever, it doesn't fucking matter. Find something you like to do that pays the bills and you'll find success. Bite your thumb at the system and it will steamroll you.
