The only good part of all this campaigning are the ads with the movie voice guy saying junk like "Mr. Smith. Wrong for North Carolina. Wrong for America."

or the ads with the old people on a porch talking bad about some politician.

All the ads are so ridiculous that they're great.

Don't forget Sarah Palin's much-reported line that Obama "pals around with terrorists." People will remember that they heard "Obama" and "terrorist" together. Then there's McCain's line, "Who is Barack Obama?" Sure, politicians use that one all the time. But McCain certainly knows what people get out of it - folks in the crowd would yell "terrorist" and "kill him."

Like I said before, I'm glad the candidates are toning it down. But it's too late. In the minds of many, Obama's character is permanently and falsely damaged. I'm surprised and disappointed that John McCain conducted his campaign like that, if only for a little while. Where's the McCain we knew in 2000? Shoot, where's the McCain we knew this spring? Remember in the primary when he asked a group in SC not to run ads about Rev. Wright?

And the Democratic candidates aren't doing it! Obama and Biden have never once called Sarah Palin a secessionist or witch doctor, even though her ties to the Alaskan Independence Party and Pastor Muthee are closer than any of the trumped-up charges against Obama.

I don't think the McCain camp did this as much as people's natural fear of that which is different did it. As far as the Ayers claim. He was a self-proclaimed radical terrorist in the 60s. One who does not refute his actions. Obama (and most of the Chicago Democratic establishment . . . irony there) is tied to him. This isn't an inaccurate statement.

Obama is running the same campaign he ran against Alan Keyes for Senate. He knows that public opinion is running against the Republicans as the incumbent party and that all he has to do is lay back in the cut and look pretty. He will do more damage by aggressively pushing his agenda than he will by offering a bland grouping of feel-good slogans. This isn't to say that he doesn't have ideas, but he knows that people vote more on emotion than on ideology. As long as he can keep the endorphins flowing, he'll win.

The only principle upon which he is running a lofty campaign is the principle of victory. He got down and dirty with HRC late in the primary and he started slipping. David Axelrod knows what he is doing.

Here in Alabama, Democrat Bobby Bright is going hard negative against Jay Love, the Republican candidate. I can assure you, both parties play to their audience in the most effective way.
