"in 1938, the school of engineering was moved from chapel hill to north carolina state college in raleigh, creating resentment among some chapel hill alumni" -- north carolina through four centuries by william s. powell
and for the sake of this thread:

Quote : | "The first record of industrial engineering as a curriculum at North Carolina State University appears in the Spring 1930 college catalog. Although a four-year program is described, no graduates or faculty are listed. At the time, both N. C. State and UNC-Chapel Hill had engineering programs, and State had a School of Science and Business which had a degree in Industrial Management. A few years later, all engineering was transferred to State and all business curricula to Chapel Hill." |
We still had engineering at State before we became the engineering school in the state.

what a stupid and utterly fucked up thread this has become
look, its like this. losing tate sucks, but he's not the whole team. i really don't foresee myself blaming a loss on his absence, because there are players who can step in and do a serviceable job.
and some of you need to prioritize your thoughts if you're gonna let one loudmouth determine how you feel about a guy having his college career ended 10/14/2008 6:37:27 PM |

Quote : | " Blatently false. NC State was created in the 1800's (1887) to correct the mistakes at UNC. UNC was supposed to have Agriculture/Engineering programs and they refused to devote enough resources to it, so the state of NC created a new school in raleigh. How the fuck did you get 1940's? It wasn't an overcrowded department...it was the fact that UNC refused to create or fund one. If you're going to talk shit, get the facts right.
Its faggots like you that make us hate UNC. Most of my friends there are great, but its the fact that I run into cock suckers like yourself too often to mention that makes me vomit when I see your gay colors running down the street. " |
Wrong, the University of North Carolina became so large it could not effectively manage itself. Thus why it had to be conslidated (not to forget the effects of the great depression either), and the Department of English moved to Greensboro to effectively become UNC-G.
The reason UNC became so large is because the initiative of the GI bill program which thousands of veterans took advantage of causeing a "housing" boom on the UNC campus. This is the primary reason there are so many freaggin buildings at UNC today. Hell most of the veterans were housed in the fucking gym because the dorms couldnt be built fast enough.
You need to learn how to read. See the quote below.

Yup. And to be exact the Department of Mathematics at UNC in which engineering courses had been taught, was divided in 1912 and the Department of Civil Engineering established. Electrical Engineering was added in 1922 to create the School of Engineering, and the following year the Department of Mechanical Engineering was added to the school. In 1938 the School of Engineering fell victim fell victim to consolidation and was transferred to North Carolina State College. This later became the College of Engineering at NC State University.
wolfAApack, you should try reading books instead of sleeping on top of them.

Ok here's what happened. The Morrill Land-Grant Act was signed by President Lincoln in 1862. This Act created endowments that were to be used in the establishment of colleges that would provide a “liberal and practical education” while focusing on military tactics, agriculture and the mechanical arts without excluding classical studies. Michigan State was the first school created from this Act. North Carolina gave the money to UNC to create engineering departments. In the mid-1880s, both state farmers and business leaders claimed that Chapel Hill’s "elitist" education did not meet the mandate set forth by the Morrill Land-Grant Act. On March 7, 1887 the North Carolina General Assembly authorized the establishment of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The state also budgeted money for the new college and transferred North Carolina's land-grant endowment to it as well. UNC kept their engineering departments for a few decades, but State was solely created for educating students in agriculture, military science, and engineering. So yes at one point they both had engineering. Both schools also had business departments. In 1938 State became the state's main engineering school and abandoned their business curricula, while UNC became the state's main school for business and abandoned their engineering curricula.
Any way you want to spin it it still comes out to NC State being created to correct the Chapel Hill mistake. 10/14/2008 7:16:37 PM |

I believe your facts are wrong about military training at NCSU. UNC was a primary training ground for Naval officers and aviators for decades.
Yes, Hinton James of which UNCs largest dormitory is named after.
