^ so...people who can only afford food should pay the same amount of taxes on that necessity as the people who can afford to have half a dozen cars? i hardly count that as fair
i know it's more complex than that, but i have a problem with (or, rather, conflicting emotions regarding) saying that someone who is below poverty level should pay a 20% tax so they can EAT

actually i think the plan does not tax necessities such as food power water etc.
Read:
the thing is that it encourages people to live debt free and the govt really doesn't want that.

^ yeah, that's possible...i won't pretend to know the details and ins/outs of all the different tax schemas...and yeah, i'm all for illegal immigrants and tourists paying for the privilege of being in this country...do away with welfare, because no one DESERVES a free ride
Quote : | "the thing is that it encourages people to live debt free and the govt really doesn't want that." |
i've heard it's a good read...i really should pick it up, so that at the very least i can have a more complete understanding of the options...i mean, i live fairly debt-free without a book telling me to (the only debt i have now is my mortgage, and i'm okay with that)
i'm confused as to why the government itself would care if people were debt-free, though (again, my ignorance on the topic)

i have no idea which "party" i'd fall into...i don't agree with any of them 100% (and none are close enough for me to overlook my disagreements with them)...quite honestly, if mccain wins, i won't be terribly disappointed...the weak link in that ticket is palin, hands down, and it's HER that bugs the crap out of me, not mccain (even though i don't agree with him, i don't hate him and i believe he's capable and competent)
i'll likely vote obama because he offers the greatest chance for changes i feel strongly about...will they happen? maybe not
either extreme (be they "whiny" liberals or "crazy" conservatives) annoy me because i think they're both blind, but in different ways...but i DO find myself siding more with the liberals than the conservatives

see, i agree with points 2 and 3 of your libertarian description, but i find issue with:
Quote : | "Libertarians pretty much think the government should be as small as possible (more so than current republicans)" |
ONLY because i truly believe that a group of people as large as ours cannot be run by a "small" government, nor do i believe that people are capable of governing themselves in a LARGE society...to me, libertarianism works great for states, small countries, and communities, but it simply isn't feasible on a large scale because it presumes to give people credit for intelligence and common sense that, as a whole, they simply don't have10/16/2008 10:48:19 AM |

when people gather together en masse, they're simply too stupid to understand how to function fairly, efficiently, and to the betterment of the whole...without leadership, anyway

I'm all for the fair tax, but its just not going to happen. Certainly not anytime soon. For now if everyone of means pays a little more in taxes & takes on a greater responsibility I'm ok with that. There is a whole lot more important stuff going on in this election than 1% of my income. If the most important thing to you about this election is that extra 1% McCain gives you over Obama then I kind of feel sorry for you. 10/16/2008 12:33:47 PM |

Personal income tax isn't as important to me as the corporate income tax.
Since I work for a contractor, we have to bid ALL of our work. As a company, we make more than $250,000 (profit that improves our fleet, compensation, etc.) per year and under Obama's plan would have an 8.5% increase in taxes that will either take away benefits and positions out of profit, or cause us to increase our prices so we will not win as much work and cause us to lose benefits and positions. YMMV.

the entire market will be faced with the same decisions its not like you're bidding against people who won't be paying the taxes.... nice try but try again...
and we (those of us in the biz) know you mean "we'll have to b.s. more on the bid and then make up for it with change orders later in the project"

I actually joked when he made the endorsement that State fans would now all vote for McCain. Let's be honest, though, it's an engineering and agriculture school - it'd go McCain anyway. I'm curious - are there any campus-wide polls or alumni polls?
And anyway, it's not that smith's endorsement is a big deal, i was just making an unnecessary reaction to that silly list of potential obama voters. I notice you didn't argue the fact that, actually, a good majority of Americans support him. 10/16/2008 2:07:18 PM |
