I never hated Raleigh...I just didn't think it was anything great until I lived in some other places.

Yes in fact I do and not for the reason you might imagine

It's not particularly hot here, but since the city is so old there's basically no building with central air

The upshot? All you have at your disposal is a shitty window-unit that consumes untold amounts of electricity in exchange for a piddly stream of cool air. It's basically a placebo box.

But actually it's not that hot here -- if you open the windows to create a cross-draft, it's not bad at all. It's just when you're in a room with one window that it gets bad.

When I initially went back to school I didn't have the resources to do it, so I asked my parents if they were willing to help me out (seeing as how I had loaned them a substantial amount of money in the past). They agreed, and got me started. Supported myself ever since, especially since I'm a graduate student with a stipend that I live off of.

Hahaha, I love how you say that like it's a good thing. Academic ladder climbing ain't shit. 350 people for each position? Sounds like a lot of people made pretty bad decisions in their career paths. Nothing like getting into totally saturated field and trying eek out some tiny niche to call your own.

Hell, one of the main reasons I went back for a master's was to teach one day after being in industry long enough to be able to actually impart knowledge to other people. Maybe it's different in the make-believe world of mathematics, but nearly every GREAT professor I ever had was professionally accomplished long before beginning to teach, and it showed.
