I do the same thing. I started doing it when I did delivery for Lowe's...I had a lot of stuff to keep track of (knife, gloves, shades, phone, etc) and didn't want to leave anything at someone's house. So now, I pat each pocket before going pretty much anywhere.10/28/2008 8:38:17 PM |

That's one major advantage of always keeping stuff in the same pocket. Means I only have to tap the pocket to see if something is in it -- if there is, it's what I'm looking for. No need to empty my pockets to make sure I have everything. 10/28/2008 8:43:34 PM |

You lack what is referred to as "situational awareness" -- basically, you're a space cadet. You don't pay attention to anything that you're doing when you're doing it, and you don't pay attention to the world around you -- you live in your own little world. You also seem to be quite forgetful on top of lacking situational awareness. Unfortunately, in many situations, this can be dangerous if not deadly.
I used to have this issue of constantly losing things, until I started scuba diving. The way my team and I dive, every piece of equipment has it's own specific spot on each person. We all use essentially the same gear, set up the same way, with everything in the same location. This standardized approach to diving helps with team cohesion in possible emergency situations, and makes life easy when everyone uses the same types of gear. I decided this was a pretty neat idea and carried it over to normal life...
Example: My cell phone, keys, wallet, contact lens container, and lip balm always go in exactly the same pocket in my shorts. Heck, I bought 4-5 pairs of the same design of shorts (different colors, obviously) to help facilitate this, so I can always use the same pockets day to day. I used to always lose my sunglasses, except that now they're either in a pocket, on my face, or in the sunglasses holder in the car. When I'm wearing jeans the pockets change (no cargo pockets on jeans...) but the idea is the same -- stuff always goes in the same pocket, every time. My laptop is always either being used, or in my bookbag. My bookbag always goes in the same place in my car when I get out of class (these last two things would have prevented the issues you posted about). etc etc etc.
When I leave the house, I always ask myself (and tap each pocket to make sure the item is there) -- "Cell phone? Wallet? Keys?" etc. When I get into and out of the car, leave class, or go anywhere -- same thing. Sounds stupid but it works.
Standardization is key. No one can help you change but yourself, and you can only change if you truly want to.

I too standardize.... a trait i get from my father. He's always preached that "stuff never gets lost if it is put into the same place every time"
in addition (and I gots mad love), you need to tighten up. period. else you gonna get raped.10/28/2008 8:50:05 PM |

well!! i just have so much shit. i try to put my keys in the same place everyday i've been doing really well with that. but everything else is a disaster and it doesn't help when i have to carry like 239489 bags to school to hold all my shit. and my schedule is so inconsistent its like today i need my comp, tomorrow i don't, today i need to bring my gym clothes, but sometimes i know i don't have time so i don't. not having a consistent schedule kinda blows sometimes.
but yea. i need to be more attentive. 10/28/2008 11:36:42 PM |

What type of laptop was it?
Must be pretty sturdy to fall off of a car driving at x MPH and only have (minor?) external damage. 10/28/2008 11:43:18 PM |

You can still create consistency and be mindful of whats going on around you. You just have to put actual effort into it. Its not like its a magic gift or anything. 10/29/2008 10:21:22 AM |
