I do very little of the "pretties" here actually. We do different kinds of thinking. I work side-by-side with developers, managers and architects on a daily basis. And I do want professional respect as a designer, manager and systems architect. I've never claimed to be a code guru, but I do have a working knowledge of software engineering, and development methodologies.

I guess you're right, but I couldn't believe that somebody wouldn't think math has heavily influenced applied science, seeing as how science in general is mathematizing nature. Or, at the very least, whenever something can be expressed precisely and mathematically, it's the case that people consider it an achievement (especially when predictions are calculable).

Either way I know more science than this guy if we're talking inferential statistics, data mining, causal learning, linguistics, etc. Fuck this kid.

Yeah, fair enough. I don't like to presume much but this guy is so staggeringly ignorant about the intellectual history of the west that I doubt he knows more about science than he learned in college (or high school for that matter).

therein lies the distinction between a software engineer and a computer scientist

somewhere even further down the ladder than software engineer there's a separate distinction for interface and web designers

at least that's how I've always viewed it

realistically and his delusions of grandeur aside, if in fact there is much truth to what he's posted recently, I'll give him that he plays the ass-kissing corporate politics game well enough to land a lower management position

considering the difference between his credentials as listed on his resume, and as listed in a reputable source RE: the traffic design competition, though, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that his "management" role involves 0 direct reports

To go off on a tangent, I think I'm gonna be going back to school here next semester with the goal of concentrating on neural networks, machine learning, eventually economics, and applications of neural networks to the financial time series! It's my exciting new 10 year plan.

#1) I know you guys may not be able to fathom this, but I DO NOT DO DEVELOPMENT. I AM A USER EXPERIENCE DESIGNER. I do not write code. I am not a manager. Amazingly there are entire careers out there that do not involve computer science or applied mathematics directly.

Please read #1. I'll be glad to talk to you in design theory, interaction theory (which, actually I imagine we could have a pretty cool conversation about actually), project management pattern and practice (even though I don't do it currently), and any material science you are interested in (metals, composites, plastics, wood).
