To me, North Face is the Apple of the clothing world. No one is saying they make a bad product, just that its a little overpriced for its features. Also, people are just sick of seeing it everywhere.

the north face has made quality jackets in the past and probably still does.

when it became a fad, they started making not-so-good cheapo jackets so that everybody could afford one. i don't blame them for trying to capitalize on a fad.

so, if you want a north face jacket just b/c it's north face, go ahead and get one from dick's or somewhere...but if you want a jacket that performs well, be prepared to spend some money regardless of brand. just know what you're buying if you pick up one of the cheapo TNF jackets.

Eastern Mountain Sports is having a sale this weekend. http://www.ems.com Check them out and you might find a good deal, they're usually pretty reasonably priced.

I have 4 Mountain Hardwear Jackets and love all of them, best for the $$$, IMO. North face stuff is decent, but it is just a name. I would say go with a MH or REI brand for the lady.

anyone ever heard of Orage brand? I found some jackets and ski pants that were crazy expensive for something I have never heard of.

to be honest. orage is nothing special. they don't do anything remotely different than what's out there now.
