I've never heard of this theoretical 25% cap, and the credit limits on about half of my many cards are well over 25% of my salary.

also bumps in the interest rates should not concern you. If they do, you're playing the whole credit card game wrong.

Citi Business card currently has 0% for 12 months starting from the date you request the balance transfer (which you can do up to 12 months after receiving the card). Added Bonuses: you get a $100 Gift Card with 1st purchase, and the credit line will not show up on your personal credit report so you can max it out to your heart's content.

pretty much all of the CC companies offer that deal 24/7, your credit will depend on if you get it though

the 25% is by no means a hard and fast rule, i could see why in lower income ranges they would enforce it more strictly though

its kinda like the 30% mortgage payment to income rule, its a guideline if anything.

I have a citi card and I tried to request an increase to my credit online. It says I have an preapproved $1000 increase and I have to put in my financial info to get a higher increase. I just want to get the preapproved increase, but there's nowhere to click to accept the preapproved increase. Anybody know what to do?

^it should just automatically apply it. Usually there is a "accept offer" button at the bottom of teh screen telling you you're approved for the $1k.

Why the fuck have credit card companies stopped processing check/debit cards over the phone and are only accepting checks over the phone?

What kind of fucked up bullshit is this?

I just switched banks and havent entered it in to online bill pay yet, and they made "upgrades" to their system that apparently chopped off the 2nd line of my address that specified my apartment number, causing me not to receive my bill from last month which was 2 days from being 30 days late. Thus why I called them errr actually they called me, like 12 fucking times per day for 5 or 6 days straight for a 32 dollar payment.

However it doesnt make any sense why they only accept check by phone and then want to charge 15 bucks for doing so. Thats just fucking stupid. This bank is stupid. This card is ridiculous. Time to cancel and move on.

longest sentence ever itt.

definitely keep the card open and don't carry a balance from month to month - it'll make it so that when you do have to have credit on any of your cards or loans, it'll help out the % of credit taht you're currently using vs. what is available to you.
Always looks good.

If you call them up after applying and ask them to expedite, they'll usually 2nd day air that shit to you. True story.

BP/Chase gives you 5% back on all BP purchases, 2% back on travel & dining, 1% on everything else. Those values are doubled for your first two cycles.

However, I have heard that there is a chase card that gives 5% back on all purchases.

I did some googling and I think that chase card has been dead for over a year based on a forum I landed on talking about it. I settled on a 2% gas/groceries 1% everything else Capital One card.

Discover only gives 0.25% back on everyday purchases for the first $3000 annually though.

Depending on which one you get, you can get 5% back on your first $100 in gas every month if you get the Open Road card, or 5% back on categories that change every quarter.

Discover is a good card to use to maximize your cash back when you get the 5%, but not really for every day purchases.

I have heard American Express Blue Cash is good if you spend a lot annually, but I don't really have any details about that.

there's a top secret card distributed by Associated Bank.

It is just called the Platinum card, but it is completely unadvertised on their website. You have to call in to apply for it. It's just about the only card left doing a CONSTANT 5% on everyday purchases (gas, groceries, drugstores).

When I say constant, I mean it isn't just for the first 6/12/18 months. I think the yearly cap is $300 cash back, or $6000 of spending if you only spend in those categories. Other purchases get 1%.

Tell them Fanatik sent you.

Shell Mastercard gives you 5% cash back on gas and 1% everything else. It's been around for a while.

NEW SUBJECT, but not a new thread

so I just paid off my car (woot) and ive only got a measly 3k limit on my card which im spending monthly AND paying off in full monthly, i have excellent credit (750-850)

just wondering if paying off the car, meaning it's closed now, should necesitate either upping my limit with wachovia or getting a new card with another company, i like to spread the wealth and make good relationships with different companies (healthcare loan through capitalone, car through BofA, card and banking with wachovia)

obviously Wachovia can tell I can afford it since they have access to my banking but just wondering what would be "best" credit wise...i'd like to get up to 850 just ONCE, lol

upping your limit would be fine. I'm not aware of any benefit for having another line with a different company (not to say that multiple credit lines won't help, but I'm not sure how much they help).

In fact, opening a new line would ding you a small bit for a while. In the end, all that really matters, credit line wise, is your ratio of available credit to total credit.

not a pro - just what I've noticed been told. someone feel free to add/correct.

what i figured, just didnt know if anyone had heard that building relationships with different companies was a good strategy, makes sense to me but yeah i guess it is marginal compared to a higher limit on a card in good standing already

well on some level, building a history with a company may work to your benefit, as down the road you may be able to use your history with them as leverage. but a lot of times, if you ask/bitch/complain/whatever enough and have good/excellent credit, you can get what you want no matter your history with the company.

again, I'm not pro - I'm sure someone will post something much more benefical for you; these are just my thoughts

as far as I know, you don't get docked for checking your own credit score... (either via the 3 free ones or by subscribing to the service from one of those companies)

true, you can check your own score as many times as you want w/o any negative effects.

In fact, with SOME of the reporting agencies, checking your own often enough will "bump" the undesirable checks (those inquiries from CC agencies, etc) off your report, thereby raising your score. This is called "bumpage". (google it, there's tons of info out there)

Does anyone know how often you can get a credit line increase from SECU? What amounts? I have had the card for about 5 years, started out with $500 and only have filled out the online form a couple of times over the past few years, only asking for an increase of $500 each time. I do my primary banking with them. Anyone have any information?

alright now that I am out of school and have a secure job and everything, I will admit that my CITI rewards card has a $9000 balance at 19% interest rate. Do you all think I have a vialbe option if I contact CITI, ask them to take off the rewards program and instead of that give me a lower rate? Do you think i can open another card with another company and transfer this balance to 0%? Or how do you do this? Essentially as much of the debt that I can get lowered to a smaller interest rate, the better (duh) If so I could pay that off in a year I think. Just want some advice on this. I basically lived the first couple of years away from home without thinking where all the money was going. I'll stop rambling....

I should note I am paying $700/mo to get rid of it all, just seems like I could do $8400 within 12 mos if not more

^there are a lot of cards that offer 0% interest on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months...so if you did that you'd have to pay a 3-4% bt fee, but you'd end up saving a lot of money in the long run.

Contact a debt consolidation agency if lowering the rate doesn't work out. PM me if you want a specific name that's worked out well for me. The 0% transfer is also possibility if plan on paying it off.

All, I will comment that most financial institutes have changed their lending requirements significantly. Companies are taking a VERY serious look at applications now. A clean history, high FICO score and household income aren't enough anymore. Ratios are also playing a key factor in deciding to approve / reject. Been through it more than I care to recount recently. Ridiculous how tight the credit market is right now compared to 1 year ago.

I will probably wait a few months and pay down a few grand before trying to transfer to a new zero balance card, basically get down to what I know I can pay off in 12 months before applying. So I will still be getting out of all of this quicker. I do have a shit ton of money coming from moving out and selling stuff, getting my deposit back and so on. I plan on living like a broke college student for a while, I basically have everything I want and need and I am prepared to do it.

Keep doing that as long as possible, regardless of income. Life as a simple, broke college student can actually be quite enjoyable. Over the next few years, that may just mean more hiking, biking, reading, etc. instead of partying. But the longer you stretch out this period of extremely low expenses the better off you are. Financially, you won't be able to recognize yourself within just a few short years. You'll be very un-broke.

not necessarily true. Every time I've done a balance transfer (always with Citi), it was just a quick phone call and they waived the transfer fee. You'd be amazed what you can talk them into over the phone. Actually, the standard 0% offer from Citi usually features no BT fee.

Also, $250 (or free RT flight) after your first purchase on this Chase Sapphire card:

http://www.chasesapphire.com/chase-sapphire-preferred/#offer-details_500

It's a fairly crappy card otherwise, and carries an annual fee after the first year so make sure to cancel/convert it once you get your free $$.
