I love this idea and the younger this program starts the less selfish kids will be when they are older. I volunteered a lot at nursing homes when I was in middle school. All I did was hang out, no cleaning or anything like that involved so it was rather enjoyable for me.

I like this quote and thought it was relevant. It's part of the reason I'm against mandatory volunteering. If it's something you really want to do (i.e. not a sacrifice) volunteering seems just fine.

I think community service is great for this country, I'm all for it.

I'm not all for some failtastic, bloated, government program that redistributes wealth, and relies on one group to pay off another's debt.

If a school, person, etc. wants to offer a scholarship and require community service (a reasonable amount), then I think that's fine. Hell, even state governments doing this with lottery funds is fine with me.

There was this one woman that in the course of a 4 hour visit, told me 7 times that she was knitting her new great grandson from Durham an afghan because she did not want him to get cold. How does a blanket with tons of holes in it keep you warm? Then she would talk about her grand daughter who had the kid and where she went to college and where she lives now. At least this did take the time I was there.

It always smells like pee pee in rest homes.
