Yeah, I read it earlier. Big surprise, a General saying that an expensive defense system is extremely important and must not be cancelled.

The Obama administration might want to get an unbiased expert opinion on the feasibility of these interceptor missiles.

Well, there are some things you can always count on: Generals taking an aggressive stance, and France taking a pussified stance. Much like how I don't put much stock in that general arguing for the missile defense, I don't put any stock in France opposing it because that's what they do. They are the gay in-law of the EU. He's right-leaning economically, no doubt about it. But he's still a Frenchman when it comes to defense.

It isn't so much the French are pussies, it's that they want to be more important than they are. They are... dare I say.. uppity.

might be worthless, might save millions of lives one day, who knows

an average person might be able to get work and afford healthcare

however an average person cannot stop a missile attack

yep, russia made this decision for him

shut the fuck and stop arm chair quarterbacking. you don't know shit about shit when it comes to this decision. and neither do i. but i'm sure as fuck not pretending to. but rest assured that the president and the pentagon probably know a whole fuck-ton more about the situation than you. give it a goddamn rest.

i'm just going off the AP article I read earlier today

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_US_MISSILE_DEFENSE?SITE=INKEN&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

btw i remember using the "the pentagon knows more than you and i" argument during the iraq war

fell on deaf ears obviously because...it was the iraq war

OMG THE ASSOCIATED PRESS IS A RIGHT WING RAG

1) Missile Defense would be the way to go if it worked 100% of the time...they still don't have a system that works.

2) Given the technology of this system is suspect at best, we are far more secure leaning on non-proliferation and keeping tabs on the nukes that are out there (in fact, one our most ridiculous blunders was not buying up the former Soviet warheads for bargain prices while we had the chance, instead we poured money into this crap...). This has been the biggest money pit for the past 4 decades.

3) ICBMs were the threat of the Cold War. The threat today is a nuclear or dirty bomb in a truck or suitcase.

4) Why not use our resources fighting threats that do exist with technology that works, rather than imagined (or at the very least much much lower) threats with technology that doesn't work.

people have claimed this was more about iran/israel anyway. and we'd be better off dealing with iran if we had russia more on our side. not to mention, this missile defense system was intended for long-range missiles where iirc iran is likely leaning more towards shorter-range options.

We totally forgot Poland.

HOW SOON WE FORGET.

Anyhoo, we're placing more AEGIS cruisers in the area to watch out for Iran.

"Sikorski is interpreted thusly: "Radoslaw Sikorski, said he had secured assurances from Washington that the U.S. would honor a commitment to deploy Patriot missiles in Poland, made as part of the deal to host the shield." Huh. Again, a notable lack of roiling. Let's cut him.

* Former Polish President Lech Walesa

Walesa is quoted saying: "'It's not that we need the shield, but it's about the way we're treated here.'"

OOOOOOKKKKKKKAAAAAYYYYY...... So, in an article about the "roiling" that has been inflicted by Obama upon Europe, exactly one European is quoted as expressing unhappiness, and that European specifically notes that the shield was unnecessary."

A key element of the conservative case? The AP article I posted above says its a betrayal to the Poles and Czechs...is the Associated Press "the conservative case"? I always thought they were about as non-biased as you can get

I guess I'll need to find different sources, like blogspot editorials

Because AP articles always provide a comprehensive, reasoned report of events and broad sentiment. Especially those that are regurgitating editorial columns from Eastern European tabloids.

I don't think that article offers the Polish or Czech view any more than a Paul Krugman or Robert Novak column represents the American view.

But can you suggest a better source for this story? I'd still take an AP article over a blogspot editorial. Any day.

it depends on the AP story. they pick up stories from all sorts of sources.

but more to your point, they did sacrifice some good-will towards the czechs, poles, et al. because the governments of those countries had to convince their populace that pissing off the russians further would be in their best interests. the united states changed its mind on that so the powers that be pissed off russia for no good reason. but i think this sacrifice is worth having a better relationship with russia. they can help with iran as well as nuclear non-proliferation in general with this issue out of the way.

""My task here was not to negotiate with the Russians," Obama told CBS' "Face the Nation" in an interview for broadcast Sunday. "The Russians don't make determinations about what our defense posture is.”

"Russia had always been paranoid about this, but George Bush was right. This wasn't a threat to them," Obama said. "And this program will not be a threat to them."
He added: "If the byproduct of it is that the Russians feel a little less paranoid and are now willing to work more effectively with us to deal with threats like ballistic missiles from Iran or nuclear development in Iran, you know, then that's a bonus."

Here's what Bush proposed and what the neocons are hyperventilating over the ending of plans for:

And here's the coverage of the AEGIS ship-based system proposed by Obama:
