I think it's important to note that airline pilots get paid well for the amount of work they do.

I have a friend that flies for Southwest, here's what he's told me...

1: He gets paid by flight time, rather than the number of takeoffs/landings. Since taking off and landing are really the only parts where the pilot works, they get paid more for working less. Thus pilots like the longer-haul flights -- less work, get paid more.

2: After they reach 1,000ft of altitude, pilots can switch on Autopilot. After that (unless something goes wrong), all the pilots have to do is land the plane. He did say that since he enjoys flying the plane, at less busy airports he'll usually fly it up to 15-20,000ft before he hits autopilot. At busy airports with regimented flight patters, he'll hit autopilot as quickly as possible and let the plane do the work.

3: After autopilot is enabled, he does the crossword until it's time to land.

4: If he happens to fly into RDU, he announces "We are en route to Raleigh, North Carolina, home of the Mighty Mighty Wolfpack. If you happen to be a Carolina or Duke fan, please raise your hand so the flight attendants may identify you...you will not be receiving a complimentary meal."

Noen said it best.

You have to start off at the bottom. I'm talking dirty whore low (check airlinepilotcentral.com, which was mentioned earlier, for pay scales). I'm currently in training for a regional airline (we fly for northwest), and I'll make worse than you could imagine for my first year. It does increase steadily per year, but we generally do not make decent money until we upgrade from first officer to Captain, and even then we are still underpaid.

Once you get to the Major airlines (Delta-Northwest, American, Continetal, US Air, etc) you start back at low pay the first year, with a significant increase in subsequent years. Upgrade to captain at a Major airline is where you start making about 120,000 and up per year. Keep in mind at this point most pilots are generally 40 years old.

International pilots make tons of cash as well. Many US pilots have began taking jobs overseas in places like UAE and China because other countries desperately need pilots and pay through the teeth for somebody with low time (little experience).

But I'd advise anyone not to get into this job for the money. In the beginning, there absolutely is none. The industry is unstable (I lost my job at American Eagle Airlines before I even started training due to reduced flying). However, if you don't want to be confined to one city and enjoy the constantly moving lifestyle and you love flying, go for it. This is the best occupation in the world. There's nothing like the view from an office at 40,000 feet.

Oh by the way, submit the application and follow up on it. I always wondered what HR would say if they got an applicant with absolutely no experience.

Aww, does it hurt knowing I both: have friends, and actually answered a question accurately?

elduderino: Have you ever looked at puddle jumpers in the Caribbean or Micronesia/Indonesia/et al? I knew a guy down there that said he basically made ~55k a year flying a few days a week, and loved the setup. He'd jumped around for a few years on regional airlines and cargo in the states, before he fell into the jumper job

my dad's best friend is a pilot for USAirways and makes $$$$$

but it's been unstable and he's constantly worried about his job. sometimes he'll work 2 days a month and pull nearly 200k, and sometimes he'll have to take a demotion to f/o and fly a couple times a week for next to nothing just to keep his job.

all said and done though, he rakes it in for relatively little work. and until he settled down with his latest wife, dude was constantly pulling some fine flight attendant ass

I've heard of some guys going over to the Caribbean, but I'm fresh out of instructing with relatively low time so decided to try out the regionals here before making any life changing decisions that moving to another country would entail. After some years in this system, if I get tired with the lifestyle I'll definitely consider some of those jobs abroad. If it were easy to get a flying job in Europe you'd probably find me there now, but the JAA conversion is expensive and time consuming.

Other developing places like the UAE and China are desperate for pilots. There's definitely a continuing trend of more and more airlines in the regions that you mentioned who really could care less about how much time you have as long as you have a type rating in an aircraft that they fly. So we'll continue feeding those countries heavily until our economy turns around and the Legacy airlines and big boy cargos (FedEx, UPS) start hiring again in numbers.
